A new all-strings music ensemble at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point
will play its inaugural concert Dec. 3.
The Campus Symphony Orchestra
will perform at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 3, at Michelsen Hall of the Noel
Fine Arts Center. Music Professor Steven Bjella conducts the group, and student
Laura Hamilton is an apprentice conductor. Student Marie Dobernig will serve as
a guest oboist.
The group will perform “Palladio”
by Karl Jenkins, “Theme from Moldau” by Bedrich Smetana, “Russian Sailors Dance”
by Reinhold Gleire, “Gabriel’s Oboe” from the motion picture “The Mission” and
written by Ennio Morricone and “Christmas Concerto” by Arcangelo Corelli.
Several students will perform solos on the violin and cello.
Part of the Music Department Scholarship Series, the
concert is $8.25 for adults, $5.25 for senior citizens, $4.25 for students and
free the day of the concert for students with a UW-Stevens Point I.D. Tickets
are available at the University Information and Tickets Office in the Dreyfus University
Center, by calling 715-346-4100 or 800-838-3378 or at http://tickets.uwsp.edu. Tickets may also be
purchased at the door if available.
The ensemble offers an orchestral opportunity for
string-playing students who may not be majoring in music, said Bjella, or for
music majors who play strings as a secondary instrument.
The orchestra course is also open to members of the
community who may audit the class or take it for one credit. No auditions are
held, but experience playing a string instrument is required.
