Most Americans are aware that nuclear fallout from atomic bomb tests poisoned the environment. Far fewer recognize scientists used this radioactivity to document the global "ecosphere." Learn more about these studies at a free lecture offered by the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

"Nuclear Fallout and the Birth of the Ecosphere" will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 13, presented by Jerry Jessee, assistant professor of history. Held in the Pinery Room of the Portage County Public Library, 1001 Main St., Stevens Point, this is the fourth talk in the eight-part College of Letters and Science 2016-2017 Community Lecture Series. The public may attend free of charge.

"This talk explains how the scientists who traced nuclear fallout across the globe fundamentally changed how we think about the planet and our place in it," Jessee said.

Jessee received his undergraduate degree at the University of California at Santa Barbara before earning post-graduate degrees from Montana State University. His specialties include the history of science, history of technology and environmental history.
