UW-Stevens Point student Taylar Price is a communication major
Taylar Price

Taylar Price is one of the first people many prospective students meet at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. Price, a communication major from Beloit, Wis., serves as an Admissions Office student tour guide, and is known for her infectious smile, her positive attitude and a desire to help you find where you’re going.

“I like doing things that get me closer to people,” she said. “I’m one of those people who can talk to a stranger and be perfectly comfortable with it. When I give tours, I want to show my journey through this place including how much it has changed me and how excited I am about it.”UW-Stevens Point student Taylar Price is a communication major

Price’s own plans originally didn’t include UW-Stevens Point. After traveling the country during a college-preparation program through Beloit College, she had chosen a private college and was excited to attend. When her plans didn’t turn out as expected, she remembered a college fair where she learned about UW-Stevens Point. She quickly applied, was accepted and came to student orientation, just a couple of months before attending.

“I didn’t set foot on campus until the day of my orientation,” Price said. “My high school volleyball coach brought me because this was her alma mater. I make people laugh when I tell them I kind of felt like the little yellow person that gets dropped on a Google map when you’re trying to figure out where you’re going.”

However, “orientation went so well I had to remind myself I wasn’t going to summer camp,” she added. “I quickly learned I wanted to stay here. My first friends and I were like the three amigos. I found a good balance and it’s going really well.”

In addition to tours and classes, Price has been:
  • A cardio center employee since her first semester in 2012, where she draws rave reviews from visitors, coworkers and her supervisor for her outgoing personality, teambuilding skills and the encouragement she provides.
  • A community adviser who lives in the residence halls and serves as a resource to other students on the floor.
  • A counselor for a multicultural student leadership conference.
  • A volunteer poll worker during elections.
Price plans to graduate in May 2017, after which, she would like to give other young students their chance to participate in a college-preparation program like she had in school.

“When it helped me find out what FAFSA (the free application for federal student aid) meant, that was the coolest thing ever,” Price said. “If I could start a pre-college program here like that, it would be a dream come true. I would love to have a chance to change some lives.”
