Public invited to Native American Awareness Week events
A variety of events dedicated to Native American education, culture and contemporary issues will be at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point to celebrate Native American Awareness Week, April 27-May 5.
Sponsored by the American Indians Reaching for Opportunities (AIRO) student organization and the Native American Center, all events, except Saturday’s pow-wow, are free. All events are open to the public.
• Monday, April 27: Panel - The Importance of Retaining Tribal Languages with Ron Corn Jr., Leon Valliere Sr. and Jeremy Mohawk, 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Dreyfus University Center Theater
• Tuesday, April 28: American Indian Drum Demonstration and Nanapowe Singers, 6 to 7 p.m. in the Dreyfus University Center Encore Room
• Wednesday, April 29: Coffee and Culture student panel discussion - Different Cultures, Different Tribes, AIRO, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Dreyfus University Center Laird Room
• Thursday, April 30: UW American Indian Access to Success Initiative - 7 to 8 p.m. in Dreyfus University Center Room 374
• Friday, May 1: Menominee Use of Medical Plants - noon to 1 p.m. in the Dreyfus University Center Laird Room
• Saturday, May 2: AIRO Pow-Wow, Berg Gymnasium (students $3, adults $5, children free). 1 p.m. First Grand Entry, 5 p.m. feast, 7 p.m. Second Grand Entry.
