Nate Peterson

University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point first-year student Nate Peterson graduated near the top of his high school class. His academic success, intelligence and interest in science and math had many at Marshfield High School in Marshfield, Wis., presuming he was headed for UW-Madison or another school of its size.

Peterson, though, had other goals. He desired a more affordable education at a right-sized university close to home. UW-Stevens Point was the perfect fit.

“Choosing Point is one of the best decisions I ever made,” said Peterson, who lives on campus in Burroughs Hall. “The community is so open. I feel welcomed here. It’s as great of an educational experience as you’ll find anywhere, especially for the cost.”

Peterson tells anyone considering UW-Stevens Point to make the same decision he did.

“Do you like environmental classes? Come here,” he said. “The sciences are great, too, and the campus is the perfect size. The longest walk I have is 15 minutes.”

Peterson majors in paper science and engineering for its career prospects and because of his passion for science and math. He envisions working one day at a paper mill somewhere around Tomahawk, Wis., if he gets his way.

“My parents taught me to go after everything with all my might,” Peterson said.

Outside the classroom, the Stevens Point area is conducive to Peterson’s traditional hobbies of hunting and fishing. He also plays a guitar.

“I love the adrenaline of catching a fish or seeing a buck step out,” he said. “I’ve been playing guitar around 10 years. It’s a great stress reliever.”

UW-Stevens Point has helped him expand his horizons toward other interests including the sport of curling. He also plans to participate in more extracurricular activities as time goes on.

“This campus introduces me to so many new things,” Peterson said. “Maybe I’ll look into music ensembles. I also want to look more into intramurals. I love the competition.”
