What is Reading In the Disciplines? Reading In the Disciplines is a one-credit, pass/fail course, attached to a parent course, designed specifically to help you develop your abilities to deal successfully with the readings and lecture material in that parent course.

How does Reading In the Disciplines work? Collaboration is the key to successful Reading In the Disciplines group work. You meet once a week with a small group of fellow students and a trained Reading In the Disciplines group leader to go over class readings, notes, and handouts.

What can Reading In the Disciplines offer you? Reading In the Disciplines will take you deeper into your understanding of the parent course. Here's how:

  • You will improve your understanding of the readings. You will get the opportunity to discuss the readings in depth under the guidance of a trained discussion leader.

  • You will explore your responses and reactions to course material. You will be meeting with the same students each week, allowing you to get to know others in your group and to ask questions in a safe and exploratory environment.

  • You will develop confidence in explaining and presenting your ideas in front of your peers and in classroom discussion. As the semester progresses you will have many opportunities to formulate responses and arguments within the discussion group which will make you a more confident participant in class discussion.

What kinds of students enroll in Reading In the Disciplines? Reading In the Disciplines can benefit all students, from those who expect 'A's to those who hope to earn 'C's, and from those who love the subject material to those who have their doubts about its merit. Part of the strength of Reading In the Disciplines is in this diversity of students who enroll.

What are the course requirements? The course requirements are minimal, but vital to the success of the Reading In the Disciplines group:

  1. Attend all group sessions. (A maximum of three excused absences are allowed).

  2. Actively participate in these meetings.

  3. Write and bring to each meeting a response to the class readings, when assigned by the group leader.

  4. Write a short (2 page) final paper reflecting on your learning experience in in Reading In the Disciplines.

How do I sign up for Reading In the Disciplines?

A Reading In the Disciplines Group Leader will come to your parent course to give you more information about the program and to distribute sign-up sheets. Once a meeting time has been determined, you will be contacted as to the time and place.
