Programs
Bachelor of Art/Bachelor of Science BA/BS in Dance
UWSP is dedicated to offering a comprehensive and varied dance education in a liberal arts setting. The Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees in dance investigate the dance field from many perspectives. To maintain a standard of excellence, admittance to the program is by audition only.
The Dance Program is unique in its breath of technical offerings. In addition to courses which allow students to develop a proficiency in four techniques – ballet and modern, jazz and tap, - students also pursue rigorous study Dance History, Movement Analysis, Dance Composition, Interdisciplinary Studies, and Dance Education.
The dance faculty works with students to re-evaluate technique and explore new approaches to training at a high level. This re-evaluation includes training with optimal anatomical alignment that supports injury-free dancing. Students also develop the ability to work as a part of an ensemble, the ability to work openly and honestly with other dancers, the ability to be flexible in the artistic process with choreographers, directors, rehearsal assistants, and the ability to collaborate successfully with other artists and technicians.
The program provides dancers with many opportunities to perform, choreograph, design, costume, teach, write, create multimedia work, and present original research. The broad range of the curriculum provides the opportunity for students to integrate the knowledge of dance with other art forms and academic disciplines. Graduates of the dance program have gone onto to perform with local, national, and international dance companies and choreographers. Our students open their own dance studios, become artistic directors of their own organizations, and are accepted to top-rated graduate programs.
UWSP’s dance program educates thinking dancers who are prepared to create and innovate in the dance field and beyond.
