UWSP Dance Program Goals
Dance Program Student Evaluation
and Participation
UWSP’s Dance Program is accredited by the National Association of
Schools of Dance. Our BA and BS curriculum features Ballet, Jazz, Tap, ,
Modern, Theatre Dance, Dance Composition and Theoretical Studies. Dance
Majors complete 48 credits in dance including the senior-level
Interdisciplinary Seminar, a course that integrates dance with other
academic disciplines and art forms. As part of the seminar course,
students create interdisciplinary
and multimedia projects, a process that encourages new ways of
thinking about dance, broadens employment potential, and contributes to
a total educational experience. UWSP’s dance curriculum is structured to
allow students to pursue an additional major or minor in another field.
Those admitted to the dance minor complete 27 credits in dance.
UWSP’s dance program is dedicated to creating a dynamic environment that
inspires and engages students to become thinking artists in the field of
dance through technical, theoretical and compositional inquiry.
The dance faculty works with students to re-evaluate technique and
explore new approaches to training at a high level. This re-evaluation
includes training with optimal anatomical alignment that supports
injury-free dancing. Students also develop the ability to work as a part
of an ensemble, the ability to work openly and honestly with other
dancers, and the ability to be flexible in the artistic process with
choreographers, directors, and rehearsal assistants. Therefore, we do
begin all new students in our 100-level technique courses. (Curriculum Description for the
major and minor follows.)

Foreign language substitution: Students who wish to take a foreign
language during their freshman year would substitute their language of
choice for the humanities elective in the fall semester and the natural
science elective in the spring semester.
Course Sequence: The sequence of courses above for the second,
third, and fourth years fulfill only the dance major. This list does not
include a recommended sequence of general degree requirement courses.
Dance technique and Health Enhancement (HE): Most dance technique
courses will fulfill part of the two credit Health Enhancement (HE)
requirement for the B.A. and B.S. degrees. Check the catalog for
specific course numbers. |
