Children of Eden
Music and Lyrics by Stephen Schwartz
Book by John Caird

Directed by Alan Shorter

Based on a concept by Charles Lisanby Orchestrations by Bruce Coughlin and Martin Erskine

"A deeply heartfelt, joyous and inspirational musical about parents, children, and faith…and centuries of unresolved family business!"

November 15-17 and 20-23, 2002

The Story: Freely based on the story of Genesis, Children of Eden is a frank, humanistic, and often humorous examination of the age-old conflict between parents and children. Adam, Eve, Noah and the "Father" who created them deal with the headstrong, cataclysmic actions of their respective children and learn that "the hardest part of love…is the letting go.". Composer Stephen Schwartz (Godspell and Pippin) and playwright John Caird (Les Miserables) combine their talents to create an evening of theatrical storytelling at its best. From Creation to The Great Flood, complete with the Ark and all the animals, Children of Eden is a visual and musical delight for young and old. A mix of pop, folk, rock, reggae, gospel, and Broadway styles, the score is composer Stephen Schwartz's most elaborate work to date. Joyous and sometimes introspective, Children of Eden is about second chances and the need to begin again.
