| | | 12/31/2011 | Graduating BFA Actress Makes It To Survivor Finale Andrea Boehlke will be graduating in a few days with a BFA in Acting from the Department of Theatre & Dance at University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point. She took a bit of time off last fall, providing a decidedly cryptic excuse, to participate in the 22nd edition of the popular CBS series Survivor. Andrea advanced to the show’s finale before being voted off. She will be participating in the Department of Theatre & Dance Senior Showcase in New York City in the week following the conclusion of the Survivor season.

Gerald Avery (Dance 2008) made his Broadway debut last night at the Foxwoods Theatre SPIDER-MAN TURN OFF THE DARK featuring new music and lyrics by 22-time Grammy winners Bono and The Edge of U2 and direction by Tony Award winner Julie Taymor (The Lion King). Fang earned a degree in dance and psychology from UWSP in 1994 and an MFA in dance from George Mason University in 2009. She was a member of Doug Varone and Dancers from 1996 to 2006 and has taught and staged Varone’s works for various universities and companies, including the North Carolina School of the Arts, CityDance Ensemble, BalletMet Columbus, George Mason University, The Ohio State University and the University of Minnesota. She has worked with choreographers Wally Cardona, Colleen Thomas, Bill Young and Penny Vercelline and has taught at the American Dance Festival Winter Intensive, the Open Look Festival in St. Petersburg, Russia and in New York City at Movement Research, Dance New Amsterdam and the 92nd St. Y and the summer American Dance Festival.
Fang is the recipient of a 2007 New York Dance and Performance (Bessie) Award for her performance with Doug Varone and Dancers. In 2008 she was a distinguished speaker at UWSP’s Laird Youth Leadership Day.

Andy Broomell a graduating BFA Design & Technology student has been named the recipient of the inaugural Melvin R. Laird Exceptional Artist Award. Andy receives a $5000 grant to help him reach his potential as a leading artist in his field as he leaves the University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point.
Andy is one of two students accepted this year into the prestigious scene design program at the University of California-Irvine.

| | | 1/24/2012 | Tim Howard, Coordinator of BFA Musical Theatre Program and Assistant Professor recently conducted a Master Class/Workshop at the BROADWAY THEATRE PROJECT in Florida. BROADWAY THEATRE PROJECT is a three week Musical Theatre intensive with over 200 high school and college students attending from all over the country. Other artists in attendance were Ben Vereen, Patrick Wilson, Nancy Dussault and Frank Wildhorn to name a few. Broadway Casting Director Dave Clemmons chose UWSP’s BFA Musical Theatre Program as one of the 10 top Musical Theatre Programs in the country to endorse at this summer intensive. Howard was thrilled to be chosen to work with the young artists and to recruit for the department of Theatre and Dance.

We are thrilled to announce that during the closing ceremonies of the regional Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival Maggie Raymond was named as one of two recipients of the Irene Ryan Acting Scholarship. Maggie competed with 380 actors from four states (Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana, and Michigan) for the regional award. In addition to a scholarship of $500, she will go to the Kennedy Center in April with her scene partner, Jacob Horstmeier, to compete in the national Irene Ryan competition which brings with it an additional $3,000 scholarship.
During the same ceremony, Andy Broomell received an Honorable Mention for the Barbizon Award for Theatrical Design Excellence in Scenery and Scott Frost received an Honorable Mention for the National Stage Management Fellowship.
All of these UWSP students were competing against the finest actors, designers and stage managers in the Midwest. We should be very proud of them all. |

Broadway casting director, Mark Simon visited UWSP department of Theatre and Dance where he attended the musical FLOYD COLLINS and led a master class with graduating seniors from the Senior Showcase. " In addition to coaching songs and monologues with the seniors, he also shared his wisdom from his many years of "working in the business.

Stephen Trovillion Smith has worked on stage and on camera for more than twenty years. He has worked with Gillian Anderson, Jeremy Piven, Robert Falls, Stephen Colbert, Shelley Berman and many others. In 1997, he appeared on Broadway in Horton Foote's Pulitzer Prize-winning (and Best Play Tony-nominated) THE YOUNG MAN FROM ATLANTA with Rip Torn and Shirley Knight.
In Chicago, he was nominated for the Joseph Jefferson Award for Best Actor for EASTERN STANDARD (losing to Albert Finney) and he played Lucio in MEASURE FOR MEASURE at Chicago Shakespeare Theatre. He was Ned Weeks in THE NORMAL HEART at Next Theatre, which won the Joseph Jefferson Award for Best Production and for which he received the Best Actor award from the Theatre Artists and Friends. He also played Curly in KNUCKLE at the Next (Critic's choice- Chicago Tribune, Chicago Sun-Times) and Damis in TARTUFFE at the Court Theatre.
In Florida, Steve taught at the University of Miami while appearing in THE CLEARING at Florida Stage and more than 70 short plays in 13 seasons at City Theatre's SUMMER SHORTS play festival. For his work in SUMMER SHORTS 2000 and SUMMER SHORTS 2008, he received Carbonell Award nominations as Best Supporting Actor.
On-camera work includes NBC's Crime Story, series regular on a syndicated children's TV show, and many commercials and industrial films as well as a stint as the national TV, radio and print spokesman for Rally's Restaurants. He is a member of the Actor's Equity Association (AEA), the Screen Actors Guild (SAG), and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA). He has an MFA in acting from the Goodman School of Drama at DePaul University
Three actors and six design and technology students from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point have been selected to compete at the regional American College Theatre Festival being held in East Lansing, Michigan. Central Wisconsin will have another opportunity to experience “Soldiers Circle” when it comes to the Grand Theater in Wausau on January 13th at 7:30 p.m.  |

These students will be auditioning for a series of casting directors and agents who are very significant in the New York theatre scene.

On March 28, 2012 Patti LuPone and Mandy Patinkin held a three hour master class with UWSP Theatre and Dance musical theatre seniors. The master class was attended by 170 plus students and community members. Students were rewarded with comments like "You kids are talented and are going to go places. Follow your dreams!". On Thursday, March 29th, Patti LuPone and Mandy Patinkin performed at Sentry Theatre as part of the Sentry Insurance Invitation to the Arts.
