There is an e-mail circulating that warns cellular customers that
their cellular number could be released to telemarketing firms, and charges
will apply. Is this true?
Alltel strictly maintains wireless phone number privacy, and will not sell
cellular phone numbers to telemarketing firms. The e-mail that is
circulating is a hoax. One such e-mail reads:
"JUST A REMINDER ....31 days from today, all cell phone numbers are being released to telemarketing companies and you will start to receive sale calls..YOU WILL BE CHARGED FOR THESE CALLS...To prevent this, call the following number from your cell phone: 888-382-1222. It is the National DO NOT CALL list. It will only take a minute of your time. It blocks your number for five (5) years. HELP OTHERS BY PASSING THIS ON TO ALL YOUR FRIENDS OR, you can go to www.donotcall.gov (http: www.donotcall.gov) to register."
This type of e-mail is a hoax and has been documented as such by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).
