In The Classroom

Here are some tips for professors to go green in the classroom.

  • Use D2L as much as possible. The more work that you can have your class do online, the less paper is used.
  • If you need to print handouts, print on both sides of the paper. Also make sure that your class knows that you will be providing copies so that they don’t waste notebook paper by taking notes or make their own copies.
  • Try to choose text books that are provided by UWSP Text Rental.
  • Make sure to cap dry erase markers so that they don’t dry up and get wasted quickly.
  • Try to schedule classes during peak hours of sunlight so that natural light can be utilized as much as possible instead of overhead lighting.
  • Be sure to turn off lights and equipment after use.
  • Teach energy saving concepts and environmentally friendly principals as much as you can. Find creative ways to incorporate this message into any curriculum.

In the Office

Here are some tips to save energy in the office.

  • Turn off lights and equipment when not in use.
  • Use natural lighting or a small desk lamp instead of overhead lighting.
  • Only print when necessary to save energy and paper.  Print in duplex; preview before printing; use both sides of the paper if possible.
  • Buy recycled products.
  • Avoid running extra appliances - desk fans, mobile phone chargers, portable heaters.
  • Use stairs instead of the elevator.
