Should you happen to cross the Specht Memorial Forum (commonly known as the Sundial) in front of the Noel Fine Arts Center on the evening of April, 25th between the hours of 4:00 and 8:00 PM, you may hear this chant filling the air above a crowd of rally-ers.  WRC’s annual event, “Take Back the Night” is back and this year, it will finally be returned to it’s former home, the Sundial.

The Women’s Resource Center has hosted this rally to combat sexual assault in our community on this campus almost as long as the student organization has existed.  For the first two decades, the event always took place in the Sundial.  However, during the past few years, TBtN wandered to alternative locations such as the Allen Center field and the Encore, due, at first to construction, and, last year, to

increment weather.

But the location of the event is not the sole alteration that TBtN has undergone since it’s beginnings.  As the student generations changed, so did “Take Back the Night.”  It originally included a protest march through campus, complete with picket signs boasting such phrases as “2, 4, 6, 8! Real Men Don’t Rape!” and “Step Into the Light! Take Back the Night!”  But its not the ’60’s anymore.  We just are not a “protest-march” kind of youth; a jamfest, easy-going educational forum simply suits us better.

And so the WRC has altered and grown with the campus community and offers this new, hybrid edition of TBtN in the hopes to reach a larger student audience with the important message of this event:

Empower!  Unite!  Take Back the Night!

By: Holly McKee-Clark

Everyone should feel safe in their environment, regardless of their gender, race or appearance or the time of day.  A variety of speakers and presenters will talk about issues such as rape prevention,  dating safety, resources and counseling for victims of sexual assault and many more.  The 10-piece band, Reaching Clarity, will perform between presentations and free refreshments will also be served until depleted.  So come and step into the light and help us take back the night.

Join us the evening following “Take Back the Night” for an “Open Gathering,” free for the  campus and community.  This event is intended for those who have been victims of or who have family or friends who have been affected by sexual assault or domestic violence.  Resources and support will be provided in a safe, comfortable atmosphere by professional counselors.
