What does the Otter Project do?
UWSP students from the TWS conduct tracking surveys at the Sandhill Wildlife Area, Babcock, WI. The surveys begin approximately the end of November and continue until the snow is gone for the season. Data collected, are the location of River Otter tracks and/or slides and the number of Otters traveling together. The data is used to figure out how many individual River Otters are in the area and to approximate the home ranges of the otters.
What are the Goals of the Otter Project?
The goals of the Otter project are to give new opportunities for students to gain snowshoeing and tracking skills, as well as data collecting and analysis skills. The data is used to help the Wisconsin DNR find out the numbers of otters near Sandhill and approximate home range sizes.
