Soil Judging

What Is It?

In soil judging, our team competes against other universities by describing a number of soil pits.  We look at soil properties such as depth, texture, color, grade, parent material, and many others.  Your interpretation is then scored against that of a professional soil scientist.  Each year the competition is held at different locations throughout the United States.

Who Is In Charge Of Our Chapter's Team?

Our coach is Dr. Steve Levine.  He helps students lead practices that usually start a month or more before competition.  It's a great way to meet people and network, gain valuable experience, travel, and have a great time.

The 2009 region 3 fall soil judging contest will be held on October 8-10 at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. Our first practice meeting is scheduled for this Thursday (9/24) in room 262 immediately following the regularly scheduled SWCS meeting. If you are interested in soil judging this fall, please plan on attending our first meeting. Any further questions you may contact Tyler.

Congratulations to Anna J. Johnson who placed fifth in individuals last spring, and also place 2nd in one of the soil pits overall!
