Campus Pruning

Campus pruning and the SSA have a long relationship. Besides being a source of income for the branch, the trees of UWSP receive high-quality care. In fact, the value of the services is much higher which saves the University significantly compared to hiring an outside firm.

Simply climbing trees is critical to a well-rounded education in Urban Forestry. Although climbing skills are not a requirement, they certainly make an applicant a far better candidate because they have some level of experience.

Even if they never plan to climb for a living, the students at least understand what the climbers they work with are experiencing.

Last Tree of the Day: How do I look? The campus pruning opportunities range from large and small limb trimming, to removals, to young tree training, to simply getting into the tree.

For those that have not had enough training, they are still able to go along and participate from the ground. For safety and liability reasons, all students must have Forestry 395 or equivalent beginner pruning training.

Some students love the chance to experiment and test their climbing equipment. What better way to learn than while in the field after a day in the classroom? Campus pruning is the practical application of what is taught in the Urban Forestry class and other tree health and structure classes.
