Arbor Day

Every year, the SSA plants a tree in honor of the state and national celebration of Arbor Day. Many trees on campus, actually, have been planted as part of Arbor Day and serve to beautify the school for years to come.

Arbor Day 2002

Kentucky coffeetree

Scientifc Name: (Gymnocladus dioicus)

Height: 12'

DBH (Diameter at Breast Height): 2"

Location: East of the College of Natural Resources near Reserve St.

Notes: The tree weighed about 400lbs! We transported it through rain then sleet then snow in the middle of April - typical Wisconsin weather. There was some abrasion to the tree from the nursery tarp over its 150 mile trek, but the root ball and trunk were in excellent shape. The tree could grow to 80 feet with scaly bark and gigantic leaves (1-3 feet long).

Update: 10/28/02 - The tree had a great summer, leafing out fully and showing no signs of any problems. Its location is perfect for growing into a specimen tree, and it is on track to become one. 4/7/03 - Almost a year later, the tree is gearing up for another summer after leafing out very well it's first year. We expect the tree to be much fuller as it continues to recover from the transplanting shock. Despite concerns about damage, everything seems to be growing well and benefiting from a wide, mulched mowing circle.
