Pulp cut is an annual chain saw safety and operation course taught by Dr. Houghton (SAF Advisor) in cooperation with the student SAF.  It gives students a hands-on opportunity to work with chain saws and learn basic safety, felling, delimbing, bucking, and decking techniques.  Dr Houghton is in charge of the instruction. The vice president of SAF and the equipment chair are the major coordinators of the event. Thanks to the dedication of the vice president, equipment chair, numerous student supervisors and Doc, Pulp Cut is a safe and productive activity.

Pulp cut (NR 405) is a one credit elective offered to the students of the university each fall semester. The training includes a 2-3 hour classroom familiarization and safety briefing and approximately 15-hours of hands on experience harvesting pulp wood. Students are required to attend one of the two safety briefings held early in the semester and are then given the choice to select two of 16 dates offered for field experience. The hands-on training occurs every Saturday and Sunday. On any given day, 20-25 students break out into crews of 3-5 students. After a short safety review by Doc crews are released and allowed to begin cutting. They are assisted by student supervisors who have previous pulp cut training. On most days at least one supervisor is available to assist each student group.

The earnings from pulp cut are used to maintain equipment and the remaining profits go to the student chapter to be used as needed to support the organization.
