Minimum Premed Course Requirements

These courses must be taken with a grade:

 · English: English 101, 102

(UW-Madison recommends one year of English,  MCOW requires one year of English)

· Basic Chemistry: Chemistry (114+115), 116 or Chemistry 105, 106 (if you have had no high school chemistry)

· Organic Chemistry: Chemistry 325, 326

· Biology: Biology 160 [zoology] and 285 [human physiology]

· Math: Math 111 [calculus survey] and/or Math 120 [calculus I] and/or Math 355 [statistics]
(One year of math is generally required)

· Physics: Physics 203, 204

· Enough credits for Junior standing when applying to Medical Schools

(If you have been given credit for AP courses taken in high school, you must write a letter to the medical school the year you're applying to see if they will allow the credits without taking the equivalent college course. Usually, there is no problem with AP English credits.)

Additional Recommended Courses

· Chemistry: Chemistry 365 [Biochemistry] (if you add Chemistry 248 you'll have a Chemistry minor)

· Biology: Biology 210 [Genetics], Biology 314 [Cell Biology], Biology 333 [Microbiology], Biology 317 [Developmental Biology], Biology 498/? [Immunology], Biology 382 [Endocrinology]

Premedical Winter Preceptorships: Biology 499, 2 credits. The Premedical Winter Preceptorship is a two-week, unpaid, full-time rotation with three to six physician-mentors at one of four area hospital centers (Wausau Hospital, Marshfield Clinic, Marshfield Clinic Minocqua, and Prevea Clinic [Green Bay]) during the winter vacation. It is the only program of its kind in the state. All of the host clinics except Prevea, Green Bay, provide free housing and some provide free board as well. All of the participants in the program have given it enthusiastic approval. Students may participate in two Preceptorships during their career at UWSP. Prerequisites: Sophomore standing and Biology 285 (Human Physiology), so take it soon. The applications for the preceptorship come out in September. See Dr. Sepsenwol for more information.
