So you want to be Greek?

Becoming a member of a sorority is a very rewarding experience.  When in college, students always need a positive influence, a group to be your safety net!  Joining a sorority not only is a home away from home, but gives you a group of friends you never thought you could have!  Joining a sorority helps give students new perspectives on life, family, and friendship!  Also, members help develop leadership, help instill values and character for legacies to follow.

How does one become Greek?

There is a recruitment period called "Rush" in which Greek organizations look for new members.  During this time, each organization holds various events throughout the week so 'rushees' can get to know the sororities on campus and figure out which one is right for them.

Here at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, we have an All-Sorority rush week and an Individual rush week. The All-Sorority Rush includes events put on by the three sororities on campus.  This time is for you to see what it's like to be a part of a sorority.  Individual rush is when each sorority puts on their own events.  It allows for the rushees to get to know the sisters better and vice versa.

After rush week, bids are given.  A bid allows the recipient to start pledging the sorority.  Pledging is a multi-week process (actual number of weeks varies between sororities) in which you continue to know the Greek community, learn about your organization and have a lot of fun.

At the end of the pledging process, there is an initiation ceremony in which you officially become a sister.

As a side note, don't worry about the term 'initiation.'  The process to become Greek is not like what you see in movies or may have heard.  Hazing is not tolerated.  Throughout the process, you will be treated with respect and have a great time.
