Spring Lake Projects

Since the spring of 2000, the UWSP Fisheries Society has surveyed a Wisconsin lake in Oneida or Vilas County using fyke and trap nets.  Four days each April are spent capturing all sorts of fish species; estimating lengths, weights, ages, sex, and also marking fish. The nights are spent socializing at the campground or cabins.  Data collected is then turned into scientific reports by a member enrolled in Fisheries Research class.  Michael Vogelsang with the WDNR continues to help tremendously in the logistics of the surveys.

Lake Neshonoc

Description: This project during the spring of the year involved boom-shocking, fyke netting, and mark and recapture. The Lake Neshonoc Lake Association and the WDNR provided support for the project, in return data was compiled into a report for the lake association and WDNR.
Dates:  Lake Neshonoc traditionally was done in the spring around the last weekend in April.  The last project on this lake was April 23-25, 2000.

Lake Mercer

Description: We conducted a mark-recapture estimate on walleyes.  We set fyke nets for 3 net nights and then followed through with a boom shocking run.  There have only been two previous surveys on Lake Mercer in 1976 and 1987.
Dates:  Dates for this project were April 27-29, 2001.

Carrol Lake

Description:  Carrol Lake in Oneida County, located just north of Minocqua, was surveyed in 2002.

Pictures - Lots of Walleyes and Perch in this lake!

Muskellunge Lake

Description:  2003's annual Spring Lake Survey was at Muskellunge Lake in Oneida County.  We were privileged to stay at the Kemp Field Station located on Lake Tomahawk.  Despite the name of the lake, only one Muskellunge was captured in our fyke nets.

Indian Lake

Description:  2004's annual Spring Lake Survey took place at Indian Lake in Vilas County.  This was the first survey ever taken on this lake, so it was interesting to see what was caught.  Take a look at the pictures.
