Past and Present Projects:

The Fisheries Society is involved with many major projects. We are also
involved with several smaller projects and continually search for
new projects that will provide members with a variety of experiences. Please
contact our
officers
with any project proposals. Get a hold of the 'contact'

General Information:
Description: This project during the spring of the year
involved boom-shocking, fyke netting, and mark and recapture. The Lake
Neshonoc Lake Association and the WDNR provided support for the project,
in return data is compiled into a report for the lake association and WDNR.
Dates: Lake Neshonoc traditionally was done in the spring
around the last weekend in April. The last project on this lake was April
23-25, 2000.

General Information:
Description: This was a new project for the society last year.
We did a mark-recapture estimate on walleyes. We set fyke
nets for 3 net nights and then followed through with a boom shocking run.
There have only been two previous surveys on Lake Mercer in 1976 and 1987.
Dates: Dates for this project were April 27-29, 2001.

Description: 2003's annual Spring Lake Survey was at
Muskellunge Lake in Oneida County.
Indian Lake Survey
General Information:
Description: 2004's annual Spring Lake Survey took place at Indian
Lake in Vilas County. This was the first survey ever taken on this lake,
so it was interesting to see what was caught. Take a look at the pictures.
Reports
Little Plover River Survey
General Information
Description: A
stream survey is performed on the Little Plover River in Stevens Point.
The goal is to estimate total brook trout population numbers in several
selected areas. Intensive electrofishing and data collection is performed and
produced into report by a member of the society. This summer the Little
Plover River experience some record low flows due to no rain and possibly
irrigation of farm fields in the local area. With low flow conditions, the
stream characteristics changed, and data on Brook Trout is being looked at
closely. Student research is being conducted to determine the reasons why
Brook Trout populations have decreased over the past 7 years that the Fisheries
Society has done this study.
Dates: The Little Plover project is
traditionally done in the fall before the weather turns extremely cold, usually
held the last weekend in September..

General Information:
Description: Students get the opportunity to protect sturgeon
on the Wolf River as they go on their age old spawning run. The patrol
is organized by the WDNR. This opportunity is open to everyone who
wants to get involved so don't hesitate to look up our contact information.
Dates: Sturgeon begin making their spawning run in early spring
(roughly sometime in April). They are very temperature dependant
and the exact time they make their run varies from one year to the next.

General Information:
Description: Rapid bio-assessment methods were applied to
benthic macroinvertebrate community structures at two different sites on the
channelized groundwater ditches of the Buena Vista marsh, southwest Portage
county. Three replicate samples
were collected from snag and riffle habitats at each site.
Calculated metrics were then analyzed for correlation to quantified
nutrient levels at the sampling sites. In
addition, the resulting FBI metrics and community structures were compared
between snag and riffle habitats, as well as between the two different ditches
utilized in the study area.
Dates: Specimens and data are collected in the fall. Data is compiled and specimens are identified throughout the
winter months.
