I wanted to pass along two important announcements for you.
First, we will be taking orders for fencing gloves this week. Having a proper fencing glove can make fencing a lot easier and safer. Also, having one that fits well and is only used by you can make it a much more enjoyable experience. If you would like to order a glove, you can get a basic one for $9 or a nicer one for $17. Just bring your payment to practice by Wednesday, September 30th at 9pm. You must pay your membership dues to take part in this order. Be advised that the Club does have a limited supply of communal gloves. You do not need to order one, though we strongly encourage it.
Secondly, We will be requiring emergency contact cards to be filled out next week. Please bring your health insurance information with you so that you can fill it out at practice. Should you forget, don't panic. We'll let you take one home. But they will be required starting on Monday, October 5th.
It was another great week in the Fencing Club! We continued to work on footwork and added the lunge to our repertoire. We also learned how to hold a foil. Next week we'll be working on our attacks and learning the disengage.
If you haven't paid your membership dues yet, please think about doing that at the next practice. Dues for the year are $10 for students and $25 for community members.
The foil coaching clinic was a great success! We had 5 participants. Danielle, Nick, and I all attended. We each learned a lot and very much enjoyed ourselves. We have lots of new ideas to teach you this year!
We will be having intermediate foil practice in the Alumni Room of the DUC on the following days and times. More dates and times to be announced later!

With the US Fencing Association, there is a special organization for fencing referees. This is known as the Fencing Officials Commission (FOC). They organize all the referees and are the key to rule interpretations. They also have an important voice in what rule changes get adopted in the US. The FOC has finally released an opinion on the international rule change adding most of the bib to be target in foil. On September 1st they formally recommended that this change not be adopted. Many other countries have already adopted this change. So it will be interesting so see how this goes forward. To find out more about the FOC's opinion, check out their new website!
