We have now learned the cutover and feint attack. Next week we'll be going back to some footwork again and learn the balestra and flèche. The following week we will be opening up sabre and épée for those who wish to learn!

We are opening up the Assistant Foil Coach position! Anyone interested in this position must tell Danielle, Henry, or myself by the end of practice on Tuesday November 4th. After that, we'll be meeting to determine who the new Assistant Foil Coach will be. If there are any questions, please e-mail or talk to one of us.

I will be running a Fencing Referee Clinic on the afternoon of Saturday November 8th. I highly recommend that all of you attend. It is important for a fencer to know the rules, not just for the referees. We'll discuss the rules in greater depth, answer and questions, go over some common misconceptions and mistakes, and get to practice refereeing. I strongly encourage both our new fencers and our returning fencers to participate in this event!

We are hosting two non-electric fencing tournaments this semester. We have invited three other clubs to join us once again for these events! Each of these tournaments will be held in the Laird Room of the DUC. Registration will begin at 1:30pm and bouting will begin around 2pm. All of our new fencers will be more than ready to fence in our December tournament. Indeed, last Spring a foilist who had only fenced for a couple months took 2nd place in the foil event. Mark your calendars and invite your family and friends to join us! The dates are below.

We will be having a Hibachi Night at the Tokyo Steakhouse on Thursday November 13th at 6pm. Please reserve a spot by signing up during practice. Meals are roughly $20 (it depends on what you order). Please sign up by Monday November 10th.

The Turkey Meet is coming up! We'll be taking a mini-van down just for spectators, in addition to two car-loads of competitive fencers. If you'd like a spot in the van, please make sure you're at practice next week. We'll be drawing names out of a mask for 4 seats on Monday and 3 seats on Tuesday. The Turkey Meet is Sunday November 23rd. All three weapons will be fenced at this competition. Join us for a day of fun!

Don't forget to starting paying your membership dues! It is $10 for students, $25 for non-students. Checks should be made out to UW-Stevens Point. You must have your dues paid if you want to put your name forward for a seat in the mini-van to the Turkey Meet!

For those of you who are planning your schedules for next semester, the practice times will be 4 - 6pm Mondays and Tuesdays in HEC 110. This is set in stone.

Lastly, congratulations to all of our Reminyik fencers! Everyone fenced extremely well, many fencers won bouts, and no one came in last! Nice job!

We switched from focusing on bladework to learning some footwork this week. We worked on crossovers and reviewed the disengage. Next week we'll be moving on to cutovers and feint attacks. Just a few more weeks and we'll be opening up sabre and épée to those who would like to learn!

Having learned all four parries now, we'll be moving onto disengages and learning how to deal with your opponent's pesky parries. In addition we'll learn the basics of how to bout! We encourage you to stay for the full two hours now and bout amongst each other and our intermediate foilists!

We have chosen a new assistant sabre coach. Nick Gengler, our RAC Representative, will also be the new assistant sabre coach for the Club. Congratulations Nick!

I've typed up some notes from the discussions at the Competitive Fencing Clinic. I encourage all of you to read it. Take the ideas from the notes and put them into practice. It will dramatically improve your fencing.

As a reminder, on Tuesday October 14th, right after practice, we will be hosting a movie night in the IMC of the library. We will be watching "The Three Musketeers" (1993). Featured in it are Charlie Sheen, Kiefer Sutherland, Chris O'Donnell, Oliver Platt, Tim Curry, and many others. I hope to see you there!

New foilists are moving right along this week. We worked on the high-line parries this week (4 and 6). Next week we'll learn how to defend our low-line. Don't forget to starting paying your membership dues! It is $10 for students, $25 for non-students. Checks should be made out to UW-Stevens Point.

The equipment order this year will be October 6 - 14th. Ask me at practice or send me an e-mail at fencing@uwsp.edu if you have any questions.

There is enough interest in the Club that we will be offering Club Warm-Up Jackets during the equipment order. They will be $73 a piece. They are black and purple with gold piping. Our Club logo is embroidered on the front. They're the same style as Salle Auriol's and they describe the fabric as "soft, stretchy, dries quickly". I've created a preview that includes a computer generated image of what our jacket would look like, as well as two real examples below (with Salle Auriol's on the bottom right).
