This year's Halloween Party was a blast! Lots of fencers showed up, all wearing costumes. There was everything from a shark to The Doctor. There was also tons of food, soda, and candy. A special thanks to our Treasurers Cate and Amanda for organizing it, as well as to everyone else who helped to make it a success. There are pictures here on the website from the Party. Be sure to check them out!

The beginning fencing group continues to get better and better! We are switching gears this week and learning some more footwork. We are covering the crossover forwards and crossover backwards. Bouting continues to take place during the second half of the practice (and will from here on out).

Today is the final day of the equipment order. So please remember to bring your checkbook if you want to order equipment. Also, there are pictures from last night's practice now up on the website. You can check them out here.

We fencers enjoy Halloween. To celebrate, we're having a party on Friday October 26th. The Halloween Party will be held at 7:30pm in the Programming Room in the basement of Baldwin Hall. There will be food and drinks, and costume-wearing for all!

We are covering disengages this week and the basics of bouting. Everyone is doing really well. We are also starting the equipment order this week. There will be an e-mail going out tonight about this for anyone who is not at practice this week. Please remember, the order needs to be made AND paid for by 8pm on October 24th. E-mail me at amcta579@uwsp.edu if you have any questions.

We will begin our Fall equipment order on Tuesday October 16th and end on Wednesday October 24th. All orders must be paid for IN ADVANCE. We accept cash and checks. The club will be paying for all shipping costs. Buying your own equipment is NOT required. You are welcome to use the club's equipment for as long as you are at UW-SP. If you are considering buying your own equipment, then please bring your check-book to practice.

A beginner's set will generally cost between $100 and $150. Female fencers, please think about spending an extra $22 on a plastic chest protector. We will help size all your equipment. We will also be happy to answer any questions you have.

Everyone's parries are looking good! We covered the basic low-line parries, numbers 7 and 8, today. All of the beginning fencers were doing beautifully. We'll continue working on them tomorrow. Next week it's time to start bouting! All beginning fencers should feel free to stay for the full two hours from now on.

The electric scorebox and reels were discovered to be in working order last week (which is impressive considering how old they are!). I spent about an hour testing most of the electric equipment. We have a number of working electric foils and body cords for them. All of the lamés also appear to work. As for the épées, news is not so great. We have only one working (left-handed) electric épée and plenty of body cords. However, I believe I can get a right-handed one working as well. Hopefully later this week we'll be able to put some of this equipment to the proper test - a bout!

Another week goes by, and brings us that much closer to bouting! In the beginning fencing group, we learned parries 4 and 6. Next week we'll be learning the other two basic parries, numbers 7 and 8. After that, it's time to bout! We'll keep learning more technique, but you'll know the basic attacks and defenses. I look forward to fencing you all on the piste!

The intermediate fencers continue to progress as well, in their various weapons. We should be putting an order together soon, to allow all of you to get your own equipment! More on this later!
