We went back to the basics and improved our En Garde, Advances, and Retreats. Everyone found they still have something to work on. We are still having practices next week! So I look forward to fencing with all of you then!
There's a really good video that has been a part of a recent Fencing.net discussion. This video is from 1989 at the Coaches College that summer. It's a sabre footwork video, back from the days when the flèche was legal in sabre. Aside from that point, this video shows EXCELLENT footwork that is used in all three weapons. Watch it and learn from it.
There are some pictures from the Fall Sabre Tournament now up on our website. Just click on any picture to get an enlarged version. In particular, be sure to check out the Amazing Flying Chaz!
I made a goof on the order for the Fencing Club warm-ups. I got a few incorrect sizes. Thus I will be putting together another order to help fix the problem. If you would like to purchase a Club warm-up, they are $73. Please bring the money to practice before Thanksgiving Break. I can't guarantee that they will be in before the semester ends (but I hope they are!). If not, I am in town and you can pick them up over the Winter Break. Alternatively, you can pick them up at the beginning of next semester.
Our next tournament will be the Fall Foil Tournament on Saturday December 6th. Registration starts at 1:30pm and it will be held in the Laird Room of the DUC. Everyone should definitely try and fence in this tournament! For more information, check out this handout.
Don't forget to starting paying your membership dues! It is $10 for students, $25 for non-students. Checks should be made out to UW-Stevens Point.
For those of you who are planning your schedules for next semester, the practice times will be 4 - 6pm Mondays and Tuesdays in HEC 110. This is set in stone.
This week we learned the glide. It's a wonderful piece of bladework that makes your opponent more vulnerable for an attack. Next week we'll be going back to footwork, this time with an emphasis on improving the footwork we already know. Also, we've opened up sabre and épée to all the new fencers who wish to try a second weapon!

There will be an armoury workshop on Tuesday November 18th at 6:30pm in the IMC of the Library. This will cover repairing non-electric foils, sabres, and épées. There will be a second part immediately afterward that covers repairing electric equipment.
The UW-SP Fall Sabre Tournament was a smashing success. We had 19 fencers representing 3 different clubs. Special congratulations go to Chris Langlois who took 2nd and Chaz Determan who took 3rd. All of our fencers did extremely well. Check here for complete results.

As a reminder, we will be having a Hibachi Night at the Tokyo Steakhouse this Thursday November 13th at 6pm. Meals are roughly $20 (it depends on what you order). I'm putting in the reservation today. So those of you who signed up, don't forget to come!

I will be running a Fencing Referee Clinic on the afternoon of Saturday November 8th. I highly recommend that all of you attend. It is important for a fencer to know the rules, not just for the referees. We'll discuss the rules in greater depth, answer and questions, go over some common misconceptions and mistakes, and get to practice refereeing. I strongly encourage both our new fencers and our returning fencers to participate in this event!
We are hosting two non-electric fencing tournaments this semester. We have invited three other clubs to join us once again for these events! Each of these tournaments will be held in the Laird Room of the DUC. Registration will begin at 1:30pm and bouting will begin around 2pm. All of our new fencers will be more than ready to fence in our December tournament. Indeed, last Spring a foilist who had only fenced for a couple months took 2nd place in the foil event. Mark your calendars and invite your family and friends to join us! The dates are below.
We will be having a Hibachi Night at the Tokyo Steakhouse on Thursday November 13th at 6pm. Please reserve a stop by signing up during practice. Meals are roughly $20 (it depends on what you order). Please sign up by Monday November 10th.
The Turkey Meet is coming up! We'll be taking a mini-van down just for spectators, in addition to two car-loads of competitive fencers. If you'd like a spot in the van, please make sure you're at practice on Monday. We still have a couple seats open. The Turkey Meet is Sunday November 23rd. All three weapons will be fenced at this competition. Join us for a day of fun!
