We've been gearing up for our Club tournaments this semester. We worked on perfecting the basics and getting lots of bouts in. We also had some amusement on Monday. Since we raised $80 in our little fundraiser before Spring Break, all three coaches taught Monday's practice in suits and a dress. It looked quite ridiculous as they attempted to wear fencing uniforms over their dress clothes. Thank you to everyone who made a donation for the fundraiser!

As a reminder, we are hosting two non-electric fencing tournaments again this semester, the first of which is on Sunday! Each of these tournaments will be held in the Laird Room of the DUC. Registration will begin at 1:30pm and bouting will begin around 2pm. If you're free at noon on these days, please stop by and help us setup. Mark your calendars and invite your family and friends to join us! The dates are below.

Christopher Robbins travelled down to Milwaukee at the end of Spring Break to compete in another fencing tournament. He took 6th out of 6 in Senior Men's Epee at the Wisconsin Division Summer National Qualifiers. Congratulations Christopher!

We'll be getting together on Monday April 13th after pratice to watch the Épée event from the 2007 World Championships. Come and join us in the IMC on the 3rd floor of the Library for some fencing fun!

It's Spring Break and I hope everyone is enjoying themselves! The competitive fencers had a busy start to the break with a tournament in the Twin Cities. All of them fenced extremely well, some of their best bouts of the season. Special congratulations goes to Danielle Reed who brings home a medal for 8th place in the Women's Foil event. Results of our fencers are below. For more detailed results, check here.

As a reminder, we are hosting two non-electric fencing tournaments again this semester, the first of which is in a little over a week! Each of these tournaments will be held in the Laird Room of the DUC. Registration will begin at 1:30pm and bouting will begin around 2pm. Mark your calendars and invite your family and friends to join us! The dates are below.

The Full Sabre Coach position is now open. Henry is graduating next December and he needs to have plenty of time to train his successor. Anyone who is interested in applying for the position should talk to Henry, Danielle, or myself. You need to do so before the beginning of practice on Monday, March 23rd (right after spring break). The examinations not as scary as they sound and are both great learning experiences. I encourage anyone who is even remotely interested in the position to apply.

We had Ladies Fencing Night this week, to great success. There were about a dozen new female students who attended and got to try fencing. Thank you Danielle, Amanda, Sarah, and Gina for putting that together!

We will be running a referee clinic in the DUC Alumni Room on Thursday March 12th at 6pm. This will be a condensed version of the one we hosted last Fall. A good knowledge of the rules is key for every fencer. For more information, check out the informational sheet.

On March 14 - 15th, our competitive fencers will be heading to the Twin Cities to fence in the Minnesota Open during Spring Break. It was a great event last year and looks to be just as good this year. For more information, check here.

Assistant Foil Coach Chaz gave his hour-long observed lesson this week. He did an excellent job of teaching the disengage and beat-disengage on Monday. On Tuesday we worked on an introduction to fencing from an En Garde in Sixte and how to jump forward and jump backward while fencing.

The DVD of the 2007 World Championships - Foil Event is available for check-out in the IMC (Library, 3rd Floor) under the call number: GV1147.F458 2007. I highly recommend that everyone checks it out and watches it at some point. Later this semester we'll be watching the Epee Event from this world championship.

I will be hosting a competitive fencing meeting tonight, Thursday March 5th, at 6pm in the DUC 211. If you are even remotely interested in competing next Fall, please attend. We will discuss all the details about competing in the United States Fencing Association.

There will be a Ladies Fencing Night this Monday, March 9th. Invite all your female friends to come and try out fencing that night. No boys allowed, including myself! Danielle Reed will be leading the event that night, with support from the other female Club members. There will be refreshments and cool door-prizes. Remember, this is an evening for ladies to try out fencing, so no previous experience is required. All men should report to the Alumni Room in the DUC for practice that night.
