March 27th, 2008

It's great to be back and fencing. This week we worked on our feints. Next week will be games, footwork/parries, and testing for beginning foil. Don't worry about the tests. You should all have no problems passing them. But it will be a good opportunity to give you a critique on your fencing and give you an idea of what you need to work on. Next month, we'll be focusing on tactics and tempo. I recommend you bring a notebook and pen to practices to take notes with!

We have a new advisor for the Club! Professor Francis of the History department has agreed to be our new advisor. Thank you Professor Francis!

The t-shirt order starts next Monday (March 31st). It will run through April 8th. T-shirts will be $10/shirt. Please bring cash or your checkbook to practice to order one!

Notre Dame Academy, a high school in Green Bay, will be participating in our tournament in May! They will be joining our Sabre event. The Stevens Point YMCA and UW-Marshfield/Wood County will also be participating in our tournament! They will be adding mostly foil fencers, and maybe one or two sabre fencers. Sabre registration is 9:30am-10:00am and Foil around 12:30pm-1:00pm. We will also be having prizes for the winners of each event. They will receive a gold pin in the shape of their weapon. First through third places will also receive personalized certificates again. DVD prices will be $15 per event with $6 shipping and handling on the total order.

More good practices this week. We had played fencing games on Monday and continued to work on the attack with opposition on Tuesday. Next week is Spring Break. There will be no official practices. If you would like to fence with me over the break, please send me an e-mail at amcta579@uwsp.edu. Otherwise it's back to the regular schedule the following week starting on Monday March 24th. We'll be working on our feints that week.

We are getting ready for the t-shirt and club patch order! We voted on a design for the t-shirts. David Burke's design won! The order will take place when we get back from Spring Break. Many of the shirt designs that did not win will become available on our CafePress store over the next week. Check out our new online store!

We will be having another fencing movie night this week! It will be this Thursday March 13th in the IMC Room 308 at 7pm. We will be showing the Count of Monte Cristo (2002) starring Guy Pearce, Jim Caviezel, and Richard Harris. Come join us for another great movie!

We had yet another great practice. We've moved out of the classical "en garde" and now use the modern one. We also began learning the attack with opposition. We will be continuing that through next week.

Our bakesale was a fantastic success. We made a profit of about $30! Thank you everyone for helping out!!! The armoury workshop was also a great success. We had a lot of people there. We went through the general fencing maintenance and repair work.

We are receiving another series of donations. This time it will be a series of fencing competition DVD's - one for each weapon. The first one will be Men and Women's Sabre from the 2007 US Division I Summer Nationals. It's 2 hours of amazing sabre competition. I will e-mail you when this DVD becomes available in the IMC (probably end of the month).

We are getting ready for the t-shirt and club patch order! We need a design for our cool new t-shirt!!! You can get a copy of the design sheet here. Please use only 2 colours for the design (not counting the shirt colour). All designs are due on Tuesday March 11th and we will be voting on the designs that day!

There will be a sabre clinic on Saturday March 15th (beginning of spring break) at the Notre Dame Academy in Green Bay, WI. This clinic costs $25. It will be run by Prévôt Mike Garrison who coaches the Madison Fencing Academy and the UW-Madison Fencing Club. It runs from 10am to 4pm with a lunch break. You need to bring a mask, jacket, glove, underarm protector, chest protector (women only), pants of some sort, and a sabre. You may borrow Club equipment for this event. They will lend you electric gear as needed/available. You must preregister at www.askfred.net. I will not be attending as I will be fencing at a tournament in Minnesota that weekend. You will there for be responsible finding your own ride. I recommend car pooling with other interested sabre fencers. E-mail me (amcta579@uwsp.edu) if you have any questions about the clinic or preregistering.

There will also be a competitive fencing meeting on Tuesday March 25th at 6pm in DUC 236. We will walk together over there after practice. We will discuss what is involved in competitive fencing in the United States Fencing Association. If you are interested in competing next school year, it is strongly recommended that you attend this meeting.
