February 27th, 2008

We had a fun practice. We worked on footwork and played "Red Light/Green Light" fencing style. In March, we'll be working on feints and learning the attack with opposition.

We have chosen a new foil coach. Danielle Reed, our RAC Representative, will be the new foil coach for the Club. Congratulations Danielle!

The first movie of our new fencing movie night series will be "The Last Musketeer" (2000). It was a movie made for TV in the UK. It has a lot of amazing foil fencing throughout it. We will be showing it on this Thursday, February 28th, in the IMC (library 3rd floor) at 7pm in Room 308.

There will be an armoury workshop next Tuesday March 4th at 6pm in the IMC of the Library. We'll walk over together after practice. Everyone else can meet us there in the IMC. This workshop will cover repairing non-electric foils, sabres, and épées. Weapons and tools to practice on will be available, although you are more than welcome to bring your own.

There will also be a competitive fencing meeting on Tuesday March 25th at 6pm in DUC 236. We will walk together over there after practice. We will discuss what is involved in competitive fencing in the United States Fencing Association. If you are interested in competing next school year, it is strongly recommended that you attend this meeting.

As a reminder, our Spring Fencing Tournament will be open to spectators (so invite your friends and family!). There will be foil and sabre events. Everyone will be guaranteed at least 5 bouts for foil, possibly more. Sabre you will be guaranteed at least 4 bouts. It will be in HEC 110 on Saturday May 3rd. Registration for sabre will begin at 9:30am and bouting will begin at 10:00am. There will then be a break for lunch. Foil registration will begin at 12:30pm and bouting will begin at 1:00pm.

We had a fantastic practice. This week we learned the change-beat and half-circle. We are done with beat attacks now! Next week we'll be working on footwork and playing "Red Light/Green Light" fencing style. Looking ahead to March, we'll be working on feints and learning the attack with opposition.

Cate Spaulding, one of our two treasurers, resigned tonight at the officer's meeting. Amanda Boshers will continue as the sole treasurer for the Club.

The selection process for a new foil coach is continuing to move forward. Nick Gengler, Danielle Reed, and Christopher Robbins are all candidates for this position. They each gave wonderful lessons last week and had fantastic individual interviews this week. Henry and I have decided on a person to nominate and we will have the officers vote to confirm our nomination next week. We shall have a third coach by the end of the month!

Student Television came to do some taping about the Fencing Club. They will be putting together a piece about us for their television program!

We will be having a bakesale on Wednesday February 27th from 9am till 4pm in the DUC on the first floor at Concourse Table #3. Baking will be happening on Monday February 25th at 8pm in the Burroughs Hall 1st Floor Kitchen. Attached is a copy of the work schedule. Even if you didn't sign-up to work, please come to help out! We especially need people for the slots that are coloured green on the sheet. Feel free to do your own baking and bring individually wrapped goods for us to sell!

We had a fun practice this week. We continued to improve our beat attacks by adding disengages to the mix. Next week we will be learning the change-beat and half-circle.

The Involvement Fair was a great success. We had a number of new fencers sign-up. I look forward to fencing with all of them!

We had another great practice this week. Both beginning and intermediate foilists were working on beat attacks. The intermediate foilists also got introduced to the notion of distance-stealing footwork. Next week beginning and intermediate foilists will be continuing to work on beat attacks and combining them with disengages.

The Fencing Club has been given an anonymous $200 donation. This was given to be put towards a new electric scorebox. I will be sending a thank you note on behalf of the Club to the donors.

The Spring equipment order will continue to run through February 12th. If you bought some equipment last semester and are looking to buy more, you may want to consider an underarm protector, a sabre or épée, or maybe even a pair of fencing knickers. Please note that checks will not be deposited until February 22nd or a little there after.

The Involvement Fair is this week! It will be from 7-9pm on Thursday February 7th in the Laird room of the newly reopened DUC. Please come and check out our booth! Feel free to bring your gear, suit up, and help us advertise!

We will be having a bake sale on Wednesday February 27th from 9am till 4pm in the DUC. We have the place reserved this time, so it will definitely be happening. We'll have sign-ups to work later.
