April 29th, 2009

It was another fun week at practice! We continued to go back to the basics and work on our bouting skills. We also enjoyed cupcakes and cookies on Monday! Thank you!

We will officially be having summer practices again! Those of you who will be on campus this summer, live near-by, or just want to drive back to UW-SP for some fencing fun should definitely join us. We will be meeting every Monday and Thursday evening from 6 - 8pm in HEC 110. Summer practices will run throughout all of June and July. We'll be taking the end of May and all of August off as a vacation. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask!

This past weekend our competitive fencers traveled to the Twin Cities for the Frazzini Open. Everyone fenced extremely well. Special congratulations go to Christopher and Nick who fenced some of their best bouts of the season. Christopher took 6 out of 19 in Mixed Épée, Danielle took 12 out of 12 in Mixed Foil, and Nick took 7 out of 14 in Mixed Sabre. For complete results, including pools and DE bracket, check here.

The semester may have just finished, but our competitive fencers are still fencing! On May 17th, we'll be heading back to the Twin Cities yet again to fence in the Walleye Open. For more information, check here.

We had a great time fencing this week. It was back to the basics to brush up on a few techniques that had gotten rusty. We also spent a lot of time bouting!

We hosted our biannual foil tournament last Sunday. It was another smash success. Four different fencing clubs participated, with 17 total fencers. Nine of our finest fenced and did extremely well. Congratulations to all of our fencers! Special congratulations goes to Christopher Robbins and Nick Gengler who took first and second places, respectively. Way to go! For complete results, including pools and DEs, check out them out here.

The Full Sabre Coach selection process has finally been completed. This was more than a month in the works, but Henry now has a successor. Nick Gengler will be the new Full Sabre Coach. Congratulations Nick!

We also had our Officer elections on Monday. There was a lot of shuffling around. We also add to members to our Officer ranks, who have never been Officers of the Club before! Our complete Officer list (excluding Coaches) is below.

We will officially be having épée events starting next school year! These will be held at the same time as our sabre events. For now, double entries will not be allowed. Also, we will be requiring fencing knickers and full-length socks for the épée event. This will not be required for foil and sabre. We are requiring this for épée as it is valid target and we want to ensure the safety of our fencers. At this point in time, the Club is not intending to purchase any fencing knickers. Fencers will be responsible for buying them on their own. This may change a later date. If you wish to see this changed more quickly, devise some good fundraising ideas and bring it to one of the Officers.

On April 26th, our competitive fencers will be heading back to the Twin Cities to fence in the Frazzini Open. For more information, check here.

It's almost here! This Sunday will be the Club's Foil tournament! Setup starts at noon and registration opens up at 1:30pm. I hope to see everyone there fencing (or refereeing if I've talked to you about it). We have a number of other fencing clubs joining this event and it's always a blast! Invite your family and friends to join us!

Check out this hand-out I've used in the past for preparing new fencers for the tournament. It discusses what to bring, how a tournament is run, and what to expect. I recommend you read it fully if this will be your first tournament.

On Monday, April 20th, we will be having our Officer elections! Positions that will definitely be open are President, Treasurer, and RAC Representative. All other positions can be challenged as well. Please do you best to attend this practice. I also encourage you to think about whether you'd be interested in one of the positions. They are not extremely time consuming (that's the coaches problems!). The Officers are responsible for the long term focus, planning, and events of the Club. The Coaches are responsible for the day-to-day matters. Also, don't forget that holding a leadership position looks good on resumes!

The IMC (3rd floor of the library) has three competitive fencing videos available for check out. There is one for each weapon. I encourage all fencers to watch them at some point. They are fun and it's educational to watch some of the best fencers in the world compete. The call numbers are below:

We started looking towards our Club Foil Tournament on April 19th. We talked a bit about bouting and some of the rules of fencing. We'll continue to get ready next week!

We've had a fair bit of spam-like e-mail lately. Campus members have been using the student organization distribution lists to push agendas. First and foremost, the UW-SP Fencing Club pushes no agendas on the SGA and Chancellor actions of late. Secondly, we have restricted access on who is able to use our distribution list. This should prevent most of these kinds of e-mail from reaching you in the future due to your membership in our Club. We apologize for the inconviences caused earlier.

The DVD of the 2007 Summer Nationals - Sabre Event is available for check-out in the IMC (Library, 3rd Floor) under the call number: GV1147.F456 2007. I highly recommend that everyone checks it out and watches it at some point. We watched this DVD last Spring. It's finally completed the cataloging process and is available to check out!

We'll be getting together on Monday April 13th after practice to watch the Épée event from the 2007 World Championships. Come and join us in the IMC on the 3rd floor of the Library for some fencing fun!

Our second Club tournament this semester will be a Foil one on Sunday April 19th. This tournament will be held in the Laird Room of the DUC. Registration will begin at 1:30pm and bouting will begin around 2pm. If you're free at noon, please stop by and help us setup. Mark your calendars and invite your family and friends to join us! The dates are below.

We got an introduction to the concepts of distance and tempo this week. We learned how important using distance stealing footwork is, as well as varying the tempos at which you fence.

Allen Evans is one of the better known fencing coaches in the US. He has a great website on coaching fencing. The articles are useful to fencers as well as coaches. I encourage you to check it out if you haven't before.

We hosted our Spring Sabre Tournament this past weekend. Six of our fencers competed in this fifteen person event. Special congratulations goes to Mark Juetten who took third place. Both of the top two finishers were from Notre Dame Academy. For complete results including pools and the DE bracket, check it out here.
