Everyone enjoyed jumping around at practice this week as we learned the ballestra. Next week we will be learning a new piece of bladework called the coupé (or sometimes called the cutover). We will be opening up Sabre & Épée for those who are ready starting Monday November 23rd. There will be NO practice on Wednesday November 25th, as it's right before Thanksgiving break.
As some of you may have heard at practice, Friday November 13th is an exclusive guys-only movie night. That's right, we'll be hanging out and getting in some quality male bonding when we go to see The Men Who Stare at Goats. We'll be meeting at Campus Cinema, the theater right across Division Street from campus, at 6:45 pm for the 7:10 showing. If anyone wants to walk over together from campus or doesn't know where it is, meet Nick in front of Neale hall at 6:30pm. Remember to bring money for munchies because really, what's a movie without soda and junk food? (Sorry ladies, this one's guys only. Hope I didn't get your hopes up.)
We will be hosting two recreational invitational tournaments this semester. Everyone will be guaranteed at least 5 bouts, possibly more. It will be in the Laird Room on the second floor of the Dreyfus University Center. Registration will begin at 1:30pm and bouting will begin at 2:00pm. Notre Dame Academy Fencing Club, Stevens Point YMCA Fencing Club, and UW-Marshfield/Wood County Fencing Club will all be invited to take part in our tournament. The dates and weapons fenced are below.
It's becoming that time again (holiday season) and I'm sure you've all noticed the decorations going up (waaay too early) in the stores. Well, lets grab a hold of that "festive" spirit, and give back to others. Especially as the club's mission is also to reach out to the community. Now, we may be fudging the "community" part, but I'm going to ignore that. Anyways, we are proposing to do a service project of sorts. Introducing: Operation Christmas Child. Essentially you fill up shoe boxes, typically wrapped like a present. Each shoe box has a determined gender and age based roughly on what we decide to put into it. On Wednesday November 18th, we will have a filling party at the IMC. Bring gifts to fill the shoe boxes, a shoe box, and/or an optional $7 donation (to help with shipping costs). We will then take them to the drop off location, due on November 22 at Peace Campus Center. Or if you can't make the "party" let me know, and I'll direct you how to drop it off yourself. All donated items must be new, non-perishable, and not war-related. They should be geared at kids ages 2 - 14.
It's almost time for vacation, but our competitive fencers are not done. This meet will be held in the Milwaukee area at the Catholic Memorial High School on November 22nd. Competing gives you a chance to win a real turkey, just in time for dinner! For more information on this tournament, check out its listing.
We will be having intermediate foil practice in the Alumni Room of the DUC on the following days and times. More dates and times to be announced later!
It was another great week to be a fencer. We talked about what a Feint is this week. We worked on incorporating this concept into our actions. We also continued to build our hand-foot coordination. We will continue with this next week. In a few more weeks, we will also be opening up sabre and épée to those who wish to learn. We do require a certain amount of comfort with the basic foil actions and phrases. So you will need Nick's permission for sabre or my permission to learn épée. Most of you will have no problem with this. Don't hesitate to ask any of the coaches what you can do to improve.

The IMC (3rd floor of the library) has three competitive fencing videos available for check out. There is one for each weapon. I encourage all fencers to watch them at some point. They are fun and it's educational to watch some of the best fencers in the world compete. The call numbers are below:
