Chinese Movie Series

 The 4th Chinese Movie Festival is around the corner!! Three acclaimed movies in different categories reflect aspects of Chinese society and life with entertaining value. They all have English subtitles and FREE Admission to everyone!

 1st Movie: Riding Alone for Thousand of Miles 千里走单骑

Time: 7PM, Thursday, Nov. 2nd

Location: CCC 227

 A movie by Zhang Yimou, a three-time Academy Award nominee director, tells a moving story of a man's journey across China's heartland and his touching relationship with son.

Takada, a Japanese fisherman has been estranged from his son for many years, but when the son is diagnosed with terminal cancer his daughter-in-law, Rie, summons him to the hospital. When his son refuses to see him, Rie gives him a videotape about the work his son was doing on a documentary film in a remote region of China's Yunnan province. Still troubled by the relationship, Takada decides to complete his son's work in part to develop an understanding of his son, and in part to do something for him. Once in China a series of obstacles and relationships bring him unexpectedly closer to both an understanding of himself and of his son.

 

 

2nd Movie: Blind Shaft 盲井

Time: 7PM, Thursday, Nov. 9th

 As the 2003 winner of Silver Bear Artistic Contribution in Directing and Writing at the Berlin International Film Festival , "Blind Shaft" is a savage satire about Chinese miners, who work in the illegal coal mines in northern China present-day.

Two Chinese coal miners have hit upon the perfect scam: murder one of their fellow mine workers, make the death look like an accident, and blackmailed the boss to keep the incident hushed up. For their latest "mark," they choose a naive teenager from a small village, and as they prepare to carry out their newest plan, things start to get complicated...

 

 

3rd Movie: A World Without Thieves 天下无贼

Time: 7PM, Thursday, Nov. 16th

Location: CCC 227

 The nominee of Best Asian Film in the 24th Hong Kong Film Award, it tells a story about a co-team couple heading west after taking a city businessman for his BMW. An encounter with a naive young carpenter traveling home with his life savings challenges their fate as thieves.
