Buena Vista Lab

After water samples are collected from the Buena Vista marsh each month student bring them into the lab to run chemical tests on them.

Samples being analyzed on Ion Chromophotographer.

Analysis for total hardness.

Testing the pH of the samples.

Analysis for alkalinity.

Once the samples have been taken from the ditches of Buena Vista, they are brought into the lab. From there students submit the samples to several different water quality tests. The water is tested to find inductively coupled plasma for metals, ion chromophotography for anions and cations, colorimetric data for total phosphorus and nitrogen, dissolved organic carbon, pH, acid neutralizing capacity, and conductivity.
Students from an array of backgrounds participate in testing these samples. The amount of knowledge the student has about water testing doesn't matter. All he or she needs is a willingness to learn and the lab supervisors will teach the student the techniques to test the sample.
