Text Box: Some forty million people worldwide are living with HIV and that number grows daily. World AIDS Day is December 1st and it is a chance for all of us to unite - for awareness, for compassion, for research, for protection and for action.

We need to break through the ignorance and stigma that surrounds this disease. With education and treatment patients are able to lead relatively normal lives. This disease is undiscriminating and ubiquitous. It is not a disease of deviants or the poor. It is not contained to neat communities we can choose to ignore. HIV knows no boundaries.

Regardless of it’s pervasive nature, HIV cannot be confronted with scare tactics. Better education of our children and peers alike is needed to both prevent cases and to handle those currently infected. Once we cease to be afraid and Text Box: accept the reality that is AIDS we can better unite to focus our energies and confront this disease.
When we have accepted that this virus sees only a host and not a family, a history, memories, goals and dreams we can begin the battle with ourselves. Get yourself tested. Whether you are sexually active or not, had one partner or many, whether you’re sure you couldn’t possibly be infected get tested. Once you know, the fear and ignorance is replaced with courage and knowledge and you can begin to help those around you. Help them to understand, to be aware and to be compassionate to all.
