Since 1975 the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point has provided extraordinary study/travel programs in East-Central Europe for those who seek an enriched and enhanced education beyond the bounds of the classroom or campus: The Semester offers you the exceptional opportunity to visit both the Czech and Slovakian Republics, Austria, and Hungary and to live in the cultural splendor of ancient Krakow, Poland. There, the Jagiellonian University, founded in 1364, the oldest University in Poland and the second oldest north of the Alps, will be your home. Offered is the unique opportunity not only to study Polish language, culture and society in Krakow but also to experience over 1000 years of history, magnificent architecture and art.

History is currently being made in East-Central Europe - experience it!
Realize the little known and fabulous cultures, the reality of a states planned economy in transformation to a market economy, the tragic sweep of history in crossroads of East and West, contrasting social and economic systems the spirit and gallantry of the Polish people.

Eligibility

Sophomores, Juniors, Seniors and special students from all academic disciplines with maturity, motivation, and preparation. Knowledge of foreign languages is not required. Attendance at orientation meetings is strongly recommended.


Costs

Approximately $8,250–$8,750
Estimation based on a group of 15 students

Cost Includes:

  • 15 Week Total Academic Program.
  • 12 Weeks in residence at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow.
  • Three-week extensive entry tour through Berlin, Prague, Bratislava, Budapest, Szeged and Vienna. Includes all lodgings, board, lectures and some museum entrance fees.
  • Arrangements are made to have students meet with Hungarian and Slovak students to discuss current political issues and life in contemporary East-Central Europe.
  • Air travel, Chicago-Berlin and return from Warsaw (arrangements can be made to depart from other major airports).
  • Room and Board throughout the semester.
  • UWSP tuition for Wisconsin Residents; Minnesota students qualify for reciprocity, surcharge for other out-of-staters is $1000.
  • Study tours within Poland throughout the semester may include: Zakopane and the Carpathian Mountains, Malbork Castle, Gdansk and the Baltic Coast, Warsaw, Eastern Poland, Auschwitz Concentration Camp, the Wieliczka Salt Mines.
  • UW-System mandatory health insurance.

Itinerary

Chicago-Berlin-Warsaw-Chicago. Entry tour generally includes Berlin (GERMANY), Prague (CZECH REPUBLIC), Bratislava (Capital of SLOVAKIA), Szeged and Budapest (HUNGARY) and Vienna (AUSTRIA). Housing is in hostels/dormitories, travel by train/bus.


Classes

Previously offered upper division classes concentrating on the Humanities and Social Sciences: Conversational/Survival Polish (possible intermediate/advanced level Polish), Art History, Culture and Civilization of Poland, History of Poland; East European Politics, International Studies. You may, by special arrangement enroll in Intensive Polish. Small classes, taught by Polish faculty in English, provide individual attention. Easy transfer of UWSP granted credit. A UWSP faculty member, or appointee, will accompany the group and teach in his or her discipline.

ART 397 - Art History in International Programs: Poland
3 credits, GDR: HU4

Democracy, nationalism, fascism, and communism in Eastern Europe, emphasis on Poland, late 1700’s to 1989.


INTERNATIONAL STUDIES 300 - East Central European Tour
1 credit, Required

Held during the entry study tour through Berlin in Germany, Prague in Czech Republic, Bratislava in the Slovak Republic, Vienna in Austria and Szeged and Budapest in Hungary. Letter grade based on attendance at ALL scheduled lectures, field trips and written assignments.


INTERNATIONAL STUDIES 381 - Polish Culture and Civilization

3 credits, Required     GDR: HU4

Survey of Poland's cultural development, including an examination of contemporary society, Polish musical traditions, religion, education, and literature.  This course is usually taught by a combination of instructors and lecturers.


Enrollment in a Polish language course is required.  If you are beyond Polish 211, please contact us for appropriate course #.

POLISH 101 and 102 - Intensive First Year Polish
8 credits, GDR: FL BA BM/BFA
Be prepared for over twenty hours a week in class: much progress.

POLITICAL SCIENCE 362 - East European Politics
3 credits, GDR: SS1 NW

Political structures, processes, and institutions of Central and East Europe. Emphasis on the politics of transition and challenges to democratization. Includes field trip to Warsaw with a visit to Parliament.


WELLNESS 199 A/A - Independent Study
1 credits, GDR: WL

Obtain standardized forms from the International Programs Office.


INDEPENDENT STUDY
1-3 credits

See Director / Associate Director for approval and procedural details. Independent Study credits are taken in addition to the 13 credit minimum.


Withdrawal

Up to ten weeks before the start of the program, all fees except the initial $250 deposit will be refunded. After the time, tuition, airline, tour costs and housing charges are assessed. If the program would be cancelled, all fees will be refunded. Because exchange rates and airline prices fluctuate, International Programs reserves the right to cancel, surcharge, or to alter the program.


Special Offers

A second semester option based in Szeged, Hungary will also be available. For fulltime Wisconsin resident tuition and room and board this trip will come in at approximately $5,200-$5,400! See UWSP International Programs Staff for details.
