Family Life and Making a Difference South of the Border
SUMMER  2009 -- May 22-31, 2010

Over 9 days, participants will experience the finest, as well as the most challenging, aspects of Latin American culture and family life.

Managua!!!  The world is becoming smaller, more globally connected, yet we know so little about our Southern neighbors. Students will see a full spectrum of life in Nicaragua, learning about families, the economy, sustainable gardening, and how a people can rise above their circumstances, and rise even farther when each of us lends a hand. Rosa’s learning center, sustainable garden, and lending library (all from her small home) is just one of many rural experiences we will enjoy. Plenty of time in schools, markets, tours, and restaurants will round out participant’s full exposure to family life and all its’ resiliency in this beautiful Central American country.

Making a Difference!!!  The Wisconsin Nicaragua Partnership (WN/P), with offices right here in Stevens Point, has a 40 year history making a difference Nicaraguans lives. They have sent fire engines, ambulances, wood shop tools, sewing machines, boxes of books, and even sun glasses (a major hit with the locals, kids and adults alike) to assist the resilient people of this beautiful, yet impoverished country. In the past, UWSP students sent backpacks full of school supplies to school aged girls, allowing them to go to school and be educated, rather than entering into prostitution. We plan to bring backpacks full of teaching supplies, continuing a legacy of giving, changing the trajectory of individuals, families, a people and a nation, from right here in Stevens Point!!! Other projects will provide hands on service learning for those wanting to make a difference right now!!!

Then What?!?!? How can we make a difference right here right now from our own towns? We’ll answer that question as we take two intensive day trips to St. Paul Minnesota, visiting social service facilities for diverse populations, such as the West African Family Resource Centers and Center for Victims of Torture, as well as agencies and programs serving the Hispanic and Hmong communities of Central Wisconsin and of course, our very own Wisconsin/Nicaragua Partnership. This trip will not just light your fire, it will show you exactly what you can do to get involved, and keep on making a difference in both your personal and professional lives!!!

Purpose:  To become intimately acquainted with the culture of the Hispanic population, fastest growing segment of our nation. To consider individual and family well-being in the cultural context of Latin America, along with the unique challenges, commonalities, and resources to assist in improving the quality of life for people everywhere. To see firsthand how individuals really can change the world!!!

Application Deadline: March 1, or the first Monday thereafter. We work on a first-come-first-serve basis, however, so a program may actually close before March 1. Applications may be taken after March 1 if a position is available; contact the International Programs Office for any available positions. Late applicants may have a higher airfare cost.

Go to the Applications page to find out how to get an application.
