The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point provides extraordinary study programs to those wishing an education beyond the bounds of the classroom or campus. Since 1969 both the Spring and the Fall Britain Programs have allowed students to experience Europe, Britain, and especially London.

Application Deadline: April 1 (spring semester)/ February 1 (fall semester) of the prior academic year for guaranteed consideration; though late applications can sometimes be accommodated. Please check with the International Programs Office for available positions.

Eligibility

Sophomores, Juniors, Seniors from all disciplines with academic focus, maturity, motivation, and an international perspective. Group size limit is 40 per term.


Costs

Cost Includes:

  • 14-15 Week Academic Program.
  • Air Travel, Chicago-London (arrangements can be made to depart from other major airports). Return from continental Europe in the Spring, London in the Fall.
  • Sponsored side trips in Britain may include Stratford, Cambridge, Bath, and Canterbury.
  • Room in central London, breakfasts, and most lunches and suppers:
    International Student House.
  • UW-SP tuition for Wisconsin Residents (Minnesota students qualify for reciprocity, surcharge for other out-of-staters pay ONLY $1,000).
  • UW-System Mandatory Health/Travel Insurance.
  • Plan your budget to cover: passport, personal expenses and fees for classes such as Music and Drama.
  • Study tour of the European continent.

Itinerary

Approximately two to three week continental tour: Austria, Belgium, Germany, France, Italy and Switzerland -- Stops in Amsterdam, Munich, Salzburg, Innsbruck, Florence, Ravena, Luzern, Paris, and Brussels are often planned. Accommodations in youth hostels, travel by train or bus.


Classes

Upper division classes: Art History, British History, Theatre Appreciation, English (Shakespeare), European Geography (EEC emphasis). Courses are taught by British professors on site or at varied London city locations that take advantage of much that this great and historic city affords.

A UWSP faculty member, or appointee, will accompany the group and teach in his or her discipline. Programs are filling up fast. Apply for:

Sample Core Class List

*ART 397 - Art History in International Programs
European Art, 3 credits, GDR: HU1

Survey of development of modern European art. Students may take up to nine credits in Art 397 at UWSP. This class utilizes London's many Art Museums and Galleries.


*THEATRE 329 ‑ Drama Workshop: Theatre as a Popular Art
3 credits, GDR: HU1

Popular theatre from the viewpoint of the audience, the artists and producing group through visits and tours to the theatre. There is an approximate $150 surcharge for theatre tickets.


ENGLISH 334 ‑ Shakespeare
Tragedies and Later Plays, 3 credits, GDR: HU2

Introductory material on early years of Shakespeare's life. This course involves a field trip to Strafford-upon-Avon, the Globe Theatre, or the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in London, etc. The class is designed to make even those who have no previous knowledge of Shakespeare understand and appreciate the person many consider to be the greatest playwright of all times.


GEOGRAPHY 328 - Europe
3 credits, GDR: SS1

Distinctive features of Europe as a continent; physical and historical background; natural regions and their division into political units; the characteristics of each country.

Note: This is a very important and pertinent class for all students who would like to pursue a career in international activities, which might involve Europe. Business, Communication, International Studies, Political Science, etc. students will benefit from this thorough overview of the European scene. There are field trips for the class to selected London locations on minorities and modern developments.


HISTORY 396 - Regional History: Modern Britain
3 credits, GDR: HU4

British culture, society and institutions, in the 18th century to the present.


INTERNATIONAL STUDIES 300 - European Continental Study Tour
1 credit, REQUIRED


WELLNESS 199 A/A ‑ Independent Study
3 credits, GDR: WL A/A

Obtain standardized forms and requirement packets from the International Programs Office.


INDEPENDENT STUDY
1-3 credits

Detailed forms are available in the International Programs Office. See the Director or Associate Director of International Programs for advising. Procedure for approval must be followed; please make sure you have our instruction sheet. Independent Study credits are taken in addition to the 13-credit minimum.


Withdrawal

Up to ten weeks before the start of the program, all fees except the initial $250 deposit will be refunded. After the time, tuition, airline, tour costs and housing charges are assessed. If the program would be cancelled, all fees will be refunded. Because exchange rates and airline prices fluctuate, International Programs reserves the right to cancel, surcharge, or to alter the program.


Special Offers

A second semester option based in Szeged, Hungary will also be available. For fulltime Wisconsin resident tuition and room and board this trip will come in at approximately $5,200-5,400! See UWSP International Programs Staff for details.
