Architecture, Art & Design in Greece
SUMMER: May 20 - June 9, 2009

Participants will visit Greek museums and sites concentrating on the ancient period, but also include sites from the Byzantine, Frankish, Turkokrateia and Venetian periods. Study of urbanism, religion, cultural evolution, structure and design will be highlighted. Issues and sites of concern to contemporary Greek culture will also be considered. A strong emphasis will be placed on art & design concepts.

Eligibility

This seminar is open to architecture, art, & design majors, as well as to those who share an interest in European art and culture. Psychological and sociological aspects of design and art will be Explored.


Costs

$3,990-$4,490 (estimate). This figure includes airfare from Chicago and return, 20 days lodging, most breakfasts & some dinners, all ground transportation, most entrance fees and three undergraduate Wisconsin resident credits. Minnesota residents qualify for reciprocity. $250 for all other nonresidents.

Classes and Credits

Art History or Design, for three transferable UW-SP undergraduate credits.

The Design option is IA 391/591 Seminar in Architecture, Art and Design. The Art History option is Art 397 (Humanities I). Graduate credit, IA 591, can be arranged at an extra cost and requires a research project after the trip. Other possible Art History or Design Independent Study options can be arranged with the directors.

The above courses can be audited at the same price although students registering for credit are given priority for admission.


Academic Directors

Dr. Kathe Julin, Professor of Interior Architecture
Dr. Larry F. Ball, Professor of Art History

Both professors have served as directors of similar seminar groups on field trips in Europe, United States, and Canada.

Dr. Julin has an undergraduate art degree in painting/drawing, a master’s degree in interior/environmental design from Pratt Institute, and a doctorate in Architecture from the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee.

Dr. Ball, an active field archaeologist, has a BA in Greek Language and Classical Archaeology from Oberlin College and a PhD in Roman Art from the University of Virginia. He has also been a regular member of the American School of Classical Studies in Athens and a Mellon Fellow at the American Academy in Rome.


Itinerary


Day 1 Fly overnight, Chicago - Athens
Day 2 Arrive in Athens.
Bus to Delphi, brief walk to the site, introduction to Greek culture, landscape, etc.
Dinner
Night at Delphi.
Day 3 Delphi Site
Night at Delphi.
Day 4 Hosios Loukas day trip, return at 1:00pm.
Afternoon walk to the Marmorea in Delphi.
Night at Delphi.
Day 5 Delphi Museum until 11:00am.
Coach to Naupactos.
Visit the castle and harbor (some hiking), break for lunch, shopping, beach, etc.
3:00pm continue on to Olympia via Andravida.
Dinner
Night at Olympia.
Day 6 Olympia Site & Museum.
Night in Olympia.
Day 7 Leave Olympia: Go to Navarino / Pylos.
Visit Navarino Kastro.
Free Afternnon in Navarino.
Dinner
Night at Navarino.
Day 8 Leave Navarino. Mistra Site.
Arrive at hotel in Sparta.
Dinner
Night at Navarino.
Day 9 Day trip to Monemvasia.
Dinner
Night at Sparta.
Day 10 Leave Sparta: Drive directly to Nauplion.
Brief city walk.
If time permits we'll visit a site on the way there, the fortress at Argos or a really good restaurant (if it's sort of lunch time when we're passing by...).
Dinner at Nauplion.

Day 11 Day trip to Mycenae and Tiryns.
Lunch at Mycenae.
Night at Nauplion.
Day 12 Half-day trip to Epidauros.
Free Afternoon at Nauplion.
Night at Nauplion.
Day 13 Leave Nauplion: Acrocorinth, Corinth (time permitting), Corinth Canal.
Peireus: Get on the overnight ferry to Herakleion, Crete.
Food is available on the ferry.
Night on the ferry (maybe dolphins and flying fish for entertainment).
Day 14 Crete: Arrive at Herakleion Harbor early in the morning.
Coach into town for breakfast.
Coach to Phaistos.
12:00 finish with Phaistos & continue on to a beach hotel.
Beach afternoon.
Dinner
Night near Phaistos.
Day 15 Crete: Coach to Knossos, Knossos site.
Herakleion Museum.
Ferry to Athens.
Food is available on the ferry.
Night on the ferry.
Day 16 Athens: Arrive at Peireus early AM.
Coach to hotel.
Areopagus, introduction to Athens.
Day in the Athenian Agora until early afternoon.
Long afternoon break.
Brief site later in the evening - 5:00pm.

Night at Athens.

17 - 20
The next four days will be arranged to view a variety of architectural sites and art work. Each day will consist of one major project in the morning, ending at 1:00pm, free time in the afternoon & briefer sites later in the afternoon, at 5:00pm.
The sites we’ll visit include: the Acropolis, the Acropolis Museum, the National Museum and various ethnographic sits and collections.
At least one day unscheduled (if we do two very hard days we could have two unscheduled days).
There are zillions of cool things to do in and around Athens, including Sounion, Aegina, Salamis, Hydra, shopping, Likavettos, Byzantine & Binaki Museums, beach, etc. etc. It IS Athens after all...

Day 21 Coach to airport.
Fly to Chicago.

Withdrawal

Up to ten weeks before departure, all fees except the initial deposit will be refunded on withdrawal. After that, airline cancellation charges may also be assessed.
