Intensive French language classes, at both the intermediate and advanced levels, make up the curricular core. These classes are chosen to take advantage of your location and include emphasis on French Culture and Civilization, History and Art History. Advanced students have additional course choices in areas such as Economics, History and Cinema. Your courses in Caen are administered by the CEUIE (Centre d’Enseignement Universitaire International pour Etrangers), a division of the “Université de Caen.”
You will be given a placement exam upon arrival. Regardless of the results, you will receive credit for the next sequential language course in which you would have enrolled at UWSP. Instructional staff at the Université de Caen may not advise you on matters having to do with registration and credits earned. All such matters are exclusively handled by the Department of Foreign Languages at UWSP.
Academic questions? Please contact Professor Marcia Parker.
Grade Point Averages include your grades from Caen. The Department of Foreign Languages does not offer the option of pass/fail courses toward the major or minor. You must maintain a grade point average of 2.00 in courses taken within the French major or minor to graduate. To be certified to teach French, you must complete the teaching major or minor with a GPA of 3.0 in all courses taken with the French major or minor. Your grade for any course listing two Caen classes will be an average of the grades you earn in those two classes. For example, the grade for Level 3, French 420 will be an average of your grades for Phonétique and Compréhension et Expression orales.
The French Grading System is on a scale of 0 to 20. The American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers recognize that, by tradition, the highest grades awarded by French teachers seldom exceed 14 or 15/20 and grades of 8 and 9 reflect satisfactory performance. In no way does a score of 10 mean you have received an F.
Grade Interpretation will be done by the Department of Foreign Languages at UWSP to conform to the American scale of F to A. Your grades will be interpreted according to guidelines established by the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers.
Your courses in Caen are administered by the Centre d’Enseignement Universitaire International pour Etrangers (CEUIE), a division of the Université de Caen. UWSP students may take CEUIE courses for credit but CEUIE is not a branch of the University of Wisconsin. Therefore, CEUIE courses are best understood as semi-equivalents. Do not expect a direct relationship between course offerings at UWSP and CEUIE.
