PSYC 490 uses a historical perspective that focuses on the European influences of Psychology. The course will look at the various early psychologists and theorists (Wundt, Freud, Jung, Piaget, Munsterburg, etc.) who were influential in the various fields of psychology. The course is designed to provide a sound historical perspective of psychological influence by exposing the student to both the written word supplemented by actual visitation to the many laboratories, universities, birthplaces, and museums in Europe that emphasize the various methods that psychologists use to study behavior within the context of the scientific method. Social influences are also studied.
Dr Justin Rueb, Executive Director for the Center of Leadership Excellence and Economic Development and Professor of Industrial Psychology at UWSP will lead the group. Dr. Rueb has led a group to England, Italy, Germany, Austria, France, and Switzerland. He has significant background in leadership and in the application of psychology to everyday life.

History of Psychology: Southern European Influence counts for three transferable UWSP undergraduate credits. The History of Psychology (PSYC 490) course satisfies the requirement for Psychology majors and counts as a writing emphasis course for non-majors. Graduate credit can also be arranged at an extra cost and requires a research project after the trip. Other Psychology Independent Study options can be arranged with Professor Rueb. The above courses can be audited at the same price although students registering for credit are given priority for admission.

This figure includes airfare from Chicago and return, 20 days lodging, breakfast and some dinners, coach and train transportation, many entrance fees and three undergraduate Wisconsin resident credits. This seminar is open to Psychology majors, as well as to those who share an interest in European history and culture, as well as human behavior and Psychology in general. For continuing UWSP students, a minimum GPA of 2.25 is required.
Priority is given to regularly registered UWSP students, but students from other universities and community members are welcome to apply. All participants will be registered in a college course, for credit or audit at the same cost, and will be expected to participate in the program at an intellectual level. Application forms are available from the International Programs Office or can be downloaded from the International Programs website.
The application deadline for summer programs is February 15, or the first Monday thereafter. We work on a first-come-first-serve basis, however, so a program may actually close before February 15. We strongly advise early registration. Applications may be taken after February 15 if a position is available; contact the International Programs Office for information. Late applicants may have a higher airfare cost.
Up to ten weeks before departure, all fees except the initial deposit will be refunded on withdrawal. After that cancellation charges are assessed. Because exchange rates and airline prices fluctuate, International Programs reserves the right to cancel, surcharge, or to alter the program. If a program is canceled by the International Programs Office ALL payments will be refunded to those enrolled.
