Political, Social, and Cultural Transformation in China SUMMER: June 14 – July 6, 2009
In conjunction with Chinese universities and institutions in Beijing, Shanghai and Chengdu, the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, Departments of Political Science, and the International Programs Office will offer a three-week travel-study program focusing on the contemporary political, social, and cultural transformations occurring in China. The tour will focus on these three cities, and will also include several side trips, cultural tours, museum visits, guest lectures, and walks.
BEIJING is the capital of China. It is well known for its rich cultural heritage and has several sites on the UNESCO List of World Heritage such as The Great Wall, The Forbidden City, and the Summer Palace. Tiananmen Square in Beijing is the symbol of China.
CHENGDU’s history goes back 2,500 years and has many historic and cultural places including the Wuhouci Memorial Temple, Lshan Giand Buddah, and Dujiangyan Irrigation System that is honored by the World Heritage. Chengdu is also the home for the world famous giant pandas.
SHANGHAI is the most cosmopolitan metropolis in China and has been undergoing dramatic social and economic changes in the recent decade. You can stroll the Bund, explore the pockets of colonial architecture in the old French Concession, witness the mushrooming skyscrapers, sample the exploding night life, and wander the many streets that are bursting with life. The group will visit most of these sites and also take several side trips to exciting and historic places. China is truly one of the most exciting and fast changing places in the world today.

Sophomore, junior, or senior standing. Students must in good academic standing. No previous Chinese language study required.
Participants enroll for four credits of Political Science:
POLITICAL SCIENCE 371 3 credits, GDR:SS1 Examine evolution, dynamics, and institutions of the political and economic system of the People’s Republic of China.
POLITICIAL SCIENCE 499 1-3 credits Upperclass political science majors and minors may arrange for independent study with cons chair. Credit based on scope of project.
POLITICAL SCIENCE 490/690 3 credits Examine problems in political thought or activities. Subtitle will designate topic.
Please discuss your credit options with the group leader. Graduate credit in Political Science 796 is also available at an additional cost.

Professor Jianwei Wang, from the Political Science Department, is a native of Shanghai who has traveled extensively within China and has conducted research on Chinese society and politics.

Up to ten weeks before the start of the program, all fees except the initial $250 deposit will be refunded. After the time, tuition, airline, tour costs and housing charges are assessed. If the program would be cancelled, all fees will be refunded. Because exchange rates and airline prices fluctuate, International Programs reserves the right to cancel, surcharge, or to alter the program.
