Summer Seminar May 25 to June 15 2010
Participants will visit Chinese museums and sites concentrating on the early and imperial periods. The course explores ideas on life and the afterlife as reflected in the material culture. Special attention will be given to excavated sites that have radically changed our ideas about Chinese art history. Issues and sites of concern to contemporary Chinese culture will also be considered. A strong emphasis will be placed on art historical concepts.

Art History ART 396 for three transferable UW-SP undergraduate credits.
The course can be audited at the same price although students registering for credit are given priority for admission.
Dr. Cortney E. Chaffin, Assistant Professor of Asian Art History and Dr. Larry F. Ball, Professor of Art History, will accompany the group. Dr. Chaffin has an undergraduate BA in Art History from the University of Michigan-Dearborn, and a Masters degree and a PhD in East Asian Languages and Civilizations from the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Ball, an active field archaeologist, has a BA in Greek Language & Classical Archaeology from Oberlin College and a PhD in Roman Art from the University of Virginia. He has also been a regular member of the American School of Classical Studies in Athens and a Mellon Fellow at the American Academy in Rome.
$4,490-$4,990 (estimate). This figure includes airfare from Chicago and return, 20 days lodging, most breakfasts & some dinners, all ground transportation, most entrance fees and three undergraduate Wisconsin resident credits. Minnesota residents qualify for reciprocity. $250 for all other nonresidents.
This seminar is open to art & design majors, as well as to those who share an interest in East Asian art and culture.
Up to ten weeks before departure, all fees except the initial $250 deposit will be refunded on withdrawal. After that, airline cancellation charges may also be assessed.
