Scholarships, Grants and Loans

What are they?

A scholarship is money that you do NOT need to pay back. Federal programs, organizations, and donors award scholarships on the basis of financial need, merit and achievement, or other criteria.

A grant is money that you do NOT need to pay back. Federal programs, colleges and universities usually award grants to individuals based on financial need. The words “scholarship” and “grant” are often used in place of each other.

A loan is money that you MUST pay back, usually after completing an academic program. People often receive loans based on financial need.

State Study Abroad Initiative Grant (SSAI)

SSAI grants are provided through UWSP International Programs thanks to funding from the State of Wisconsin Legislature.  Eligibility is based on financial need as determined by the UWSP Financial Aid Office--and enrollment in an official UWSP program administered by UWSP International Programs.  All eligible financial aid students receive email notification from the Director of Student Financial Aid Paul Watson and the International Programs Associate Director Mark Koepke.

Did you receive your email notification?  If you are not sure of your eligibility, contact the UWSP Financial Aid Office.

To receive one of these grants, if you are eligible, simply be accepted into an official UWSP International Program offering! The amount of the grant is based on the program you choose.

SSAI Grant amounts vary according to the program, and not all programs receive SSAI Grant support. Anticipated Awards for spring 2013 and the 2013-14 academic terms are as follows:
