The annual summer session is a six-week residential program
held on the UW-Stevens Point campus from mid June to August
1. All newly admitted Upward Bound students are required to
attend the summer session where they live in a residence
hall and attend classes that develop their basic skills and
prepare them for the next school year. Students are
enrolled in six required courses in the areas of reading,
writing, math, science, foreign language, career and
self-development. In addition, students can take up to 2
elective courses in the areas of social science, computer
skills, test-taking/study skills, physical education,
multicultural education, psychology, etc. The class sizes are
kept small to enhance individual learning. Students also
receive individual academic assistance with course material
and assignments outside of class during the 90 minute
tutorial sessions conducted each evening by Upward Bound
tutor-advisors and instructors. |

In addition to academics, the summer session exposes Upward
Bound students to life on a college campus and enriches
their social and cultural awareness as well. Wednesday
afternoons and weekends are set aside for visiting various
colleges, businesses and industries to spark students’
interest in pursuing a postsecondary degree and to learn
aspects of various careers. Furthermore, Upward Bounders
gain exposure to a wide variety of cultural events not
otherwise available to them in their home communities by
visiting museums, theaters, zoos, parks, art galleries and
other ethnic events. Also, activities such as bowling,
swimming, canoeing, games and intramural sports are planned
throughout the summer session in order to develop students’
social and leadership skills. Since the summer session runs
7 days per week for six weeks, all summer session activities
are designed to promote group solidarity and enhance
students’ self-esteem. |

Students enrolled in the Upward Bound Program
can earn high school elective credit for their
participation in each summer session. The amount of
credit earned depends on the student's high school policy. Upward Bound
does not grant grades to students for their summer course
work, but it does send a recommendation for credit each
September to students’ parents/guardians as well as their
high school. This Credit Recommendation
contains information provided by instructors and residence
hall staff on the courses students were enrolled in and
evaluates their academic and social progress made throughout
the summer session. Depending upon their overall
academic progress, effort, attendance, participation and
attitude, students can earn either full credit, half credit
or no credit for their summer session participation.
Currently, 100% of the
Upward Bound Program’s target schools grant some type of
elective credit to its student participants. |
