The researcher should have the subject sign two copies of the informed consent form.  The researcher keeps one copy and the subject keeps the other copy.

Under certain circumstances, the researcher can give the subject a copy of the consent form minus the signature line.  But most of the time it is advisable to have the subject sign two copies.
