Summary of Important Points in this Section

One of the major omissions in the previous cases was Informed Consent.

Informed consent requires that a research subject be told enough about the research to make an informed decision about participating.  In addition, treatment or benefits cannot be withheld from potential subjects because of their refusal to participate in the research.

Informed consent must also apprise the subject of any foreseeable risks as well as benefits of participation and the subject must be free to withdraw from the study at any time without penalty or prejudice.
