Archaeology Field School
Summer 2000
University Wisconsin - Stevens Point and the Central Wisconsin Archaeology Center are sponsoring a three week field experience in archaeology May 22 - June 10, 2000. The archaeology field school will continue investigations from previous field seasons at several sights in the Central Wisconsin area. Earlier investigations have located previously unrecorded sites in the Mead Wildlife Area and the Lake DuBay vicinity. These sites range from Paleo-Indian times up to the recent past. Survey of these sites will continue and additional reconnaissance will be made in surrounding areas. The primary focus of the 2000 field school will be to continue excavations at a previously reported site (Altenburg View Site) in northern Portage County. Artifacts from this site, surveyed during the 1994, 1995, 1997 and 1999 field seasons, cover a long period of occupation, dating from Late Paleo-Indian/Early Archaic to Late Historic times. Participants in the field school will have the opportunity to work on all phases of surveying, testing, and excavating sites. Field and lab experience will also be gained in cleaning, cataloging, labeling, identifying, and photographing artifacts as they are recovered. Participants will also be exposed to archival researching, excavation data recording, and archaeological reporting procedures. Three credits may be earned through participation in the field school, which is offered in cooperation with UWSP. Participants are recommended to have completed an introductory course in anthropology and a course in laboratory techniques. For UWSP students, Anthropology 250 (Introduction to Archaeology), currently being offered during the Spring 2000 semester, provides excellent background for the field experience. Additional independent study credits may be possible later in the summer by working on other Central Wisconsin Archaeology Center projects. Classes meet Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m.
to 4:00 p.m. We will meet daily at 8:00 a.m. in Lot D behind (south
of) the UWSP Science building. As a class day will be missed
due to Memorial Day (May 29th), there will be a make-up class on
Saturday, June 10th.
The cost of the field school [Anthropology 340: Field and Laboratory Techniques in Archaeology] will include a $100.00 transportation and equipment rental fee in addition to $389.55 for tuition for this three credit course. Participants need to be aware that they will need to provide for their own room and board. Participants will also have to provide for their own midday meals and other personal items, as we will be remaining in the field throughout the day. Water will be provided in portable coolers, and a portable toilet will be on the site. Students need permission of the instructor to register and space is limited, so make contact right now.
