COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND OBJECTIVES
This course is designed for undergraduate and graduate students with an interest in waste management. The overall course objectives are such that by the end of the semester the student should be able to:
1. Define and identify the characteristics of
hazardous materials
2. Discuss the important environmental laws and regulations that govern the
management of hazardous waste
3. Understand the concepts of risk assessment and remediation standards
4. Describe the current remediation technologies used for the cleanup of soils
and groundwater that have been contaminated by hazardous waste
5. Understand the criteria that affect the selection of different treatment
technologies used for site remediation
6. Become familiar with the management of medical wastes, radioactive wastes and underground storage tanks

Waste 380; Chemistry 106; Biology 101 or 130

Attendance:
Attendance will not be taken. However class attendance is strongly encouraged due to the presentation of material in class that is not found in the textbook.
Determination of the final grade:
There will be 6 quizzes worth 50 points each to be given on Wednesdays. Material for each quiz will be taken from both the assigned readings and class material delivered in the lectures preceding the quiz. Each quiz will cover approximately two weeks of readings and class material. The final exam will be part comprehensive and part covering the last two weeks of lecture material. There will also be two projects assigned during the course to be completed individually.

Course expectations for delivery of on-line material:
The instructor will make the next week's lecture information available on the Waste 476 website by Friday at 6:00PM of the previous week. The students will come to class on Monday morning prepared with copies of the upcoming week's lecture material (incl. outlines, graphs, charts, tables, figures, etc) that the instructor had placed on the website on the previous Friday.
