Pre-Nursing: Course Descriptions


Students will fulfill general degree requirements for UW-Eau Claire 

BIO 160 - Introduction to Animal Biology (5 cr) - Anatomy, physiology, adaptation, and classification of animals; morphology and anatomy of various types of animals. Three hours lecture, three hours lab per week. Additional two-hour test sections four times during the semester.
 
BIO 385 - Human Physiology (4 cr)- Normal functions of organ systems in humans; fulfills the physiology requirements for biology, human development and nutritional sciences, physical education majors, and is recommended for students with preprofessional interests in medical or allied health fields. Three hours lecture, three hours lab per week. Prereq: 160; or 101 and Chemistry 101.
 
BIO 333 - General Microbiology (4 cr) - Morphology, physiology classification, and cultivation of bacteria and viruses, with introduction to microbial genetics, pathogenesis, and immunology. Prereq: 101, 130, or 160; and Chemistry 106 or 116.
 
BIO 387 – Human Anatomy (4 cr) - Human Anatomy is examined using models, X-rays, charts, computer animations, and prosected cadaver demonstrations. Complements Biol. 285 to provide a general background in human structure and function. For students preparing for health care careers. Three hrs lecture, three hrs lab per week. Prereq.: 281 or 285 or con reg in 281 or 285.

CHEM 105 - Fundamental Chemistry (5 cr)
- (Two semester basic course) Fundamental principles and theories of chemistry, including stoichiometry, atomic and molecular structure and bonding, nuclear chemistry, thermodynamics, descriptive chemistry of nonmetals and transition metals, chemical kinetics and equilibria, introduction to organic chemistry. 3 hrs lec, 1 hr disc, 3 hrs lab per wk. Prereq: Math 90 or placement in 100 or above.

CLS 105* - Evolution of Health Care and Health Care Professions. (3 cr)- History of medicine and evolution of health care professions in the context of philosophical and cultural influences; examine various health care systems; analyze current health care system and health professions in the United States.

COMM 101 - Fundamentals of Oral Communication (2 or 3 cr) - Introduction to and application of those principles, which lead to an understanding of and facility with practical discourse. (Foreign Language equivalent may be substituted.) 

ENG 101 - Freshman English (3 cr) - Critical reading, logical thinking, and effective writing. Write frequently in and out of class using rhetorical strategies for a variety of purposes and audiences. Prereq: Satisfactory placement test score.
 
ENG 202  - Sophomore English (3 cr) - Analytical reading and writing and the methods of inquiry common to various academic disciplines. Write frequently in and out of class, using suitable sources of information and appropriate methods of documentation. Prereq: 101 or equivalent.
 
MATH 100 - College Algebra (3 cr) - Functions, solutions and graphs of linear and quadratic equations, inequalities and systems of equations; logarithmic and exponential functions. Prereq: 051 or suitable placement test score.
 
MATH 355 - Elementary Statistical Methods (4 cr)- Fundamental concepts and techniques which underlie applications to the various disciplines, including descriptive statistics; averages; dispersion; random sampling; binomial, normal, Student T, Chi-square, and F distributions; estimation and tests of hypothesis; linear regression and correlation; laboratory emphasis on sampling and applications. Prereq: 100 or a suitable placement test score.
 
PSY 110 - General Psychology (3 cr) - The study of experience and behavior.
 
PSY 260 - Introduction to Development Psychology (3 cr) - Survey of growth and development; physical, perceptual, cognitive, linguistic, emotional, and social development; emphasis on human development from conception to adulthood. Prereq: 110.
 
PSY 300 - Statistics for Psychologists (4 cr) - Calculation and interpretation of measures of central tendency, variability, correlation, and regression in psychological research; hypothesis testing and estimation from large and small samples; analysis of variance; forms of experimental design. Three hours lecture, two hours lab per week. Prereq: 110, and Math 100 or suitable placement test score.
 
HS 105 - Survey of Common Diseases (3 cr) - This course examines major disease categories such as infectious disease, cancer, stroke, and heart disease. Basic physiology, causes, risk factors, and prevention are explored within the context of public health.
 
HS 295* - Medical Terminology (2 cr) - Examination of bases of medical terms-prefixes, suffixes, roots, combined forms; terms that name the nine basic body systems and organs. Two hours lecture per week.

NRSG 211 - Wellness:  Food for Fitness (1 cr) - Introduces nutrition standards and role of nutrients in health.  Examines nutrition trends and food industry practices from a consumer's perspective.  Emphasizes understanding of personal nutrition and fitness in relation to wellness.
 
NRSG 230 - Nursing: Introduction to the Profession (3 cr) - Introduction to definition and meaning of the discipline of nursing. Nursing’s historical evolution within a context of education, practice, and theory is examined. Introduction to nursing research and contribution of nursing leaders.
 
NRSG 240 - Foundations of Nursing Practice (7 cr) - Introduces concepts of caring, communication, and clinical decision-making in professional nursing. Emphasis is on relationships, health assessment, health education, and psychomotor skills. Includes campus and clinical laboratory experiences.
 
NRSG 245 - Nursing:  Introduction to Pharmacology in Nursing Practice (2 cr) - Introduces concepts of pharmacologic therapy for collaborative nursing practice.  Selected medication categories are studied with emphasis on nursing responsibility, accountability, and safety.  MUST BE TAKEN WITH NRSG 230.
 
NRSG 330 - Nursing: Context of Practice (2 cr) - Applies nursing research and introduces health care systems as the environmental context for nursing practice. Integrates self-management skills with development of intraprofessional relationships.
 
NRSG 335 - Nursing: Health Promotion with Child, Families and Community (4 cr) - Describes roles and responsibilities of nurses who work with children, families, and/or communities. Concepts emphasized include health promotion, illness prevention, family-centered care, community health nursing, and environment.
 
NRSG 345 - Nursing: Health and Health Deviations of Adults I, Theory and Practice (7 cr) - Concepts examined are foundational to nursing and encountered across the adult lifespan in diverse settings. Explores pathophysiological theories, human responses. Focuses on selected nursing skills. Clinical decision- making related to the care of adults experiencing health and health deviations.
 
NRSG 350 - Nursing: Health and Health Deviations of Adults II (4 cr) - Focuses on complex interactions of health and health deviations of adults. Interrelationships among health problems and human responses are examined. Includes physical health, mental health, and pathological processes. Continues application of nursing clinical decision-making.
 
NRSG 352 - Nursing Practice: Adults II (2 cr) - Focuses on clinical decision making and application of theory. Emphasis on complex acute and chronic health deviations in adults. Clinical laboratory.
 
NRSG 358 - Nursing: Individual and Family Transitions (2 cr) - Focuses on nursing during major life transitions. Integration of theory, cultural implications, and individual/family responses to transitions. Primary consideration is given to nursing care with the individual and family during the perinatal experience.
 
NRSG 368 - Nursing Practice: Children, Families and Communities (2 cr) - Focuses on nursing clinical decision making process and application of knowledge of health promotion and maintenance for children and families within the context of community. Students function in various roles in providing care. Clinical laboratory.
 
NRSG 420 - Nursing: Health Enhancement (4 cr) - Theory and research relevant to health and development of adults. Conceptual basis for group as client is included. Independent health-enhancing nursing interventions for individuals or groups are examined.
 
NRSG 422 - Nursing Practice: Health Enhancement (2 cr) - Application and evaluation of theory and research to facilitate positive adult and group development and movement toward optimal health. Clinical experience incorporates independent, health enhancing nursing interventions.
 
NRSG 432 - Nursing: Management within Systems (4 cr) - Relates systems theory to management and leadership within health care organizations. Management processes, leadership behaviors, organizational culture, conflict, change and power are studied. The nurse role as manager is examined.
NRSG 435 - Nursing Practice: Families and Children with Health Deviations (3 cr) - Focuses on the relationship between nursing practice and issues surrounding families and children experiencing a health deviation or a high risk situation.
 
NRSG 438 - Nursing Practice: Families and Children with Health Deviations (2 cr) - Focuses on clinical decision making with children and families experiencing health deviations or high risk status. Increasingly sophisticated application of theory and research are emphasized. Clinical laboratory.
 
NRSG 470 - Nursing: Professional Practice within Systems (2 cr) - Senior capstone. Emphasis on synthesis of concepts and theories; critical thinking; influencing nursing and health care directions. Focuses on health care needs of a global society and nursing’s interactions within complex, interdisciplinary health care systems.
 
NRSG 472 - Nursing Practice: Application and Reflection (7 cr) - Senior capstone. Refinement of and reflection on clinical decision making, leadership, and research processes. Management of nursing care for groups of clients across the lifespan in various settings. Transition to role of beginning professional nurse.
