Vehicle use entails a wide variety of related issues which affect the liability, property, and worker's compensation experience of the University. It is critical that those making the determination on who is authorized to drive remember that driving a University vehicle is not a right but a privilege, and the exposure is extreme. All drivers of UWSP vehicles must be authorized through UWSP Transportation Services, x2884 (see link below). All vehicles except those used to transport people or property for a fee are covered for physical damage, subject to a $500 deductible. All State vehicle glass repair and replacement should be handled through the designated State vehicle glass vendor. When glass is repaired or replaced by this establishment, no deductible will apply. Authorized drivers have liability protection when driving a State vehicle on University business within the scope of their employment. Employees who are injured in a motor vehicle are covered under Worker’s Compensation. Non-employees must use their own health insurance for injuries from a motor vehicle accident. Spouses, relatives, etc. are not authorized to ride with a University employee in a State vehicle. All passengers in University vehicles must be on official University business. If you use a State of Wisconsin contracted rental firm when renting a vehicle while on State business in the United States or Canada, the insurance is included in the rate. If your department becomes aware of a potential claim they should contact the Safety & Loss Control office. An investigation will be conducted and the claim processed if applicable. Please note that all property claims must be concluded within 90 days of the incident. |
